nice. Could also be something with the exhaust resonances. with one of the setups on my cressida it was quiet up to 1500, deafening/droning 1800-2800, loud and beautiful over 3k.
lol imagine the exhaust flowing once you get to 3k, it's already pushing alot. Here are some dynos on some mildly worked 22RE, like some state, a cam and minor things. Post your 22RE/22RTE/22RE-turbo dyno runs here You can see how the 22re powers up where you felt that "vtak/vvt-i" (although VVT-i does completely many other things more complex than Honda's VTEC can manage to do)
