This isnt model year or engine specific but do any of you have experience with the cheap oil catch cans on amazon/ebay? Im seeing alot on there for like ~$30. do they work? Really just want to see how much if any oil is coming out the PCV but if the cans dont work as theyre supposed to then I'll just try something pricier
I don't have any experience with them personally but know people are putting them on certain vehicles these days - I DD a Prius and I've heard of a lot of people adding them Are you getting a lot of oil coming out of your PCV valve? I was curious and checked my PCV hose feeding to the carb last year and it was pretty clean/dry inside
you know what i havent checked the hose but i changed plugs a week ago and im pretty sure #3 was a little oily. Which is right where my pcv hose is hooked to the manifold
Maybe just take a look, you never know. Is your engine running weird like misfiring or hard to start, etc?
It definitely has a misfire. And it does have heart starts mainly after it warmed up and I drove it for a little bit but that could also be vapor lock. I'm gonna take a look at the hose and see if there's any oil in, it I'll report back soon
I'm not sure what the difference is between a 30$ catch can and a 130$ catch can is, but I'm pretty sure you can pop two holes in a coffee can and make it work like a catch can should. If the baffle in your valve cover and PCV valve are working properly you shouldn't get anything in the can. I usually hear of them used on forced induction engines. I have a turbo, so I ran one for a bit, but I ran it on the front valve cover port, not the PCV valve port. Maybe I did it wrong? I had a 30$ can, stuffed it with steel wool, and it never really got much fluid in it.
So i pulled the hose and fitting and there is definitely oil in there but nothing excessive. The baffle is in place and the PCV is working as it should. I may just install the catch can and run with it. Probably run the line to the carb like i was supposed to
Next might be to check how dirty the inside of your intake is, if you think excess oil's coming in. I believe other sources of oil getting on spark plug is piston rings or valves letting oil through.
I need to pull the head off AGAIN and see if carbon build up is keeping the valves open because compression is kind of low. I assumed it was the rings causing low compression. i had already changed the valve guide seals a while back because i could smell the burning oil
If you're feeding the intake any oil through the pcv it will get back to the chamber.. it will soak the plug. At that point, you will have a misfire since oil is nonconductive.. Try changing your pcv valve before adding a catch can. And of course, clean the system.
I understand the concept of how the oil travels. PCV works just fine. Just wanted to know if anyone had experience with the cheap catch cans.
I've only used cheap ones, because it doean't make sense to me how they can charge 100$ for a can with two ports in it. Baffling is not made of gold or anything. I'd say in my experience to avoid one with the fill level indicator, they are usually just pushed in with a rubber grommet that can fail. My first one was like that, and it would pop off if I bumped it, so I just threaded the holes and popped a screw in em to seal it up.
I use this one. I have not had a problem. https://www.amazon.com/EVIL-ENERGY-...42NyIsInFzcCI6IjUuMTEifQ==&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1
