so today i welded a new muffler on my wifes 89 (22r)

after welding it won't crank over.

when i turn on the headlights they don't come on but a relay in the engine compartment buzzes. also the oil, brake, and charge light come on with the headlight switch.

when the key is on the normal lights come on but it doesn't crank.

i've checked the fuses in the foot panel and they're all good.

does anyone have a pic of the relay diagram for the engine compartment fuse panel? mine is missing so i have no way of knowing what the relay that is making noise is.

    any help is appreciated

I know this is simple and you've probably thought of it, but have you checked the battery connections? If one of them is loose, it will allow some current, but under any kind of load, it'll fizzle out. Just a thought.

    yeah i did david.

something definitely caught some current when i was welding. sucks that all the years i've welded it's never happened. probably better on my own truck then the multi million dollar machines i used to work on lol.

i'm pretty sure it's the relay under the hood but without a diagram i have no idea what the relay is even for.

    welding setup

when you were welding, what area were you grounded to? Could you have bumped something in the process?
Did you have the battery disconnected while welding? if so, could you have misconnected it when putting it back?
Did you try disconnecting your headlights and giving it another try? What was the outcome?

Have you tried another battery? Maybe you drained it due to the welding setup?
    Good luck

Its probably that starter fuse under the hood. I had an open air filter once that had a metal ring on the top...there is that little box on driver side fender that has power, well the cover for it went missing years ago..I accidentally touched the metal part of the air filter to that hot connection and arc'd it. Pop went that same fuse..Last I bought one, it was like $7

i was grounded a couple inches from where i was welding on the pipe. the only wiring that was touched was for the 02 sensor.

thanks mines a little different. i found a diagram in a chilton manual

the wire fusible links seem to have been replaced. the little fuses like in your second link appear to be good, but i'll check them again.

mines a big rectangle. i found a diagram in a manual. thanks though!

on the 22r the only starter thing is the starter relay which is inside the cab fuse panel.

here's other stuff i've done lol:

i've checked all the relays in the truck with a multimeter and they're good.

i disconnected the ignition switch and jumped power from battery to starter trigger and the motor cranks over perfect. so i'm thinking the battery and grounds are good

when i turn on the running lights they work, but when turned to headlights the headlight relay just buzzes.

when i turn on the hazards the buzzer that makes noise if you leave the key in the ignition starts buzzing, but the hazards don't flash.

i'm pulling power for my compressor relay from the cmh circuit. my comps won't kick on. if i jump the relay the comps act like they're shorting. i've disconnected them and nothing improved.

i've checked the wiring running from the firewall out and nothing seems burned/damaged

i'm starting to lose my little mind. the electrical in the carbed trucks is pretty simple so it's bugging me that i haven't found the problem yet.

alright i figured out what happened!

the previous exhaust setup was acting as a chassis ground. when i reworked it to clear everything i lost the ground. the ignition system itself is grounded to the chassis, thats why when i jumped the starter it cranked but had no spark. i installed an 8 gauge ground from battery to chassis and it all works perfect. i'm gunna do the big 3 upgrade now that it's running again, along with a weber 32/36
