I use a 1 wire alt and a volt gauge

 

I think the wiring was pretty simple once I figured everything out. Literally there's only two more wires to hook up, one of which just jumps to the back of the alternator, the other simply gets extended and ties into the charge light.

Cost-wise they are the same. I ordered the cheapest alternator I could find with the most amps and the correct pulley - it was cheaper than all the advertised "1-wire" alternators.
