i painted the rims a bronze color with some paint from the parts store. looks pretty good for now.

annnnd heres my gorgous new motor. should be all done within a week or so. i thought silver would blend the head and intake all together nicely. i might even clean the trans if i take them out together.

block is bored over 20. and was hot tanked.
crank was ground 10/10, and polished.
    rods were honed and tanked
    [IMG]
caps and brackets were tanked too
    [IMG]
block looks all new inside. little surface rust but its only from being damp for one day at the shop.

and here it is painted up silver, with a few of the brackets done up.

I must say, that silver is really damn sharp!

I like it! I am glad that engine is and will work out for you.

haha. those damn things would have NEVER tucked. they were 8" wide with about 3" backspacing. even inside out they wouldnt clear. haha.

heres a few pics with a datsun locally today. and with another 72-74 (based on grille) hilux i saw at the store. neither owner was around. but that hilux had a sweet paintjob. possibly original.

well well well kids, the guy in the brown truck showed up today with my parts from enginebuilder. i got my crank plasticgauged and all torqued down. i noticed my machine shop guy didnt press the wrist pin bushings from my connecting rods so ill have him swap the new ones in tomorrow and get the rings and rods all in and torqued. and ill dig out my gear puller and pull the front timing chain gear off that showed up after it came back from the shop. lol. someone had put a single AND a double chain lower gear on it. maybe i got it that way. i dont know. but ill get the timing cover on and lightly snugged up. and put the new rear mainseal in. then i should be ready to yank my motor out and swap them over. i plan to do it saturday but might get ancy and do it before then. depends if work is slow this week. i do need to rejet my carb a bit richer before i have a larger motor wanting even more fuel (im already a bit lean. one step on the jets should get it better)

i would have photos but well, i didnt bother taking any. lol. ill snap some in the garage tomorrow. the haynes book i have (originally published in 77 lol) is being very helpful. like usual, its alot of page flipping around to see all the notes and photos, but i strongly suggest getting a copy for anybody with a 78 and back hilux. has TONS of info on working on the 8r-c, 18r-c, 12r and 20r. and the 81/82 22r is identical to the 20r except bore. the 83/84 non-lasers only differ in the timing chain, and the actual bearings used for the crank mains. so anybody building an early 22r FIGURE OUT WHICH STYLE YOU HAVE. the guys at engine builder can give you a few tricks for looking to see.

anyways, if anybody is doing a bottom end and needs photos of specifics or help with anything, just ask away. this is my first yota buildup but i grew up elbow deep in motors.

and sidenote, i swapped a new perfect black dashpad on. so i have a black one with a crack coming straight back of each outer screw area. i rocked it for over a year. its up for grabs if anybody wants to upgrade from a non black or a totally trashed one. i also have a set of the cardboard/vinyl kick panels im just going to use for patterns to make my own. they arent torn but could use to reglue the vinyl to the backboard around the edges.

i also put some drag flaps on. i call them that because they drag. and the truck doesnt see any mud. haha. and i put my front bumper feet back on. as well as some drip rail chrome i scored at the yard. im gonna put my ultra rare belt stripe chrome on and modify my mirror to not hit it. so little by little the truck is looking more and more old school. ill take a few photos tomorrow, but heres a teaser.
