gonna make this plain and simple. i need help to find a good way to remove and install a windshield myself insted of paying somone $100. i'm fixing all the rust and changing the chrome moldings. i know how to drop it in but not removing it, any specific glue or sealant should i use? a certain order i have to do it? and anything else i'm missing out? let me know on ASAP i'm gonna buy sheet metal and start to strip the window on monday. thanks in advance.
I'm actually going to try this myself, after paying ($75) to a group of guys in front of the local Pick N Pull to just replace the windshield gasket on my 77' SR5, only have it leak on me a week later. I'm one of those "visual" learners so I find it helpful whenever I could see video footage of whatever it is I'm trying to accomplish. YOUTUBE has a bunch of videos on replacing a windshield, and have found a couple to be very helpful. I also purchased a set of window gaskets from a guy off of Ebay, and this was a link he offered in regards to the install. Although it's not a Toyota that he's working on, it still gives you a general idea... http://www.route66restorations.com/1.html Who knows, maybe you could take some pics of when you do yours and share the step by step process you used, and post them here.
okay, i've done a good a bit of research but the only thing i cant find is that primer what is that name of the primer that you need to add before you can but the urethane on the windsheild, is it called urethane primer? how fast to i need to work with it? where can i buy it locally?
you should be able to buy the glue and every thing at a local autobody supply just my 2 cents its a time consuming job doing a glue in windshield if you dont have the tools and know how the glass is about $130 so if you pay a glass shop $200 for it and instaled out the door your money and time ahead I just had mine done on the goodguy deal for $160 cash
Just be careful cause if you nick the edge of the windshield while removing it, you could end up with a cracked windshield. There is also a dam kit (Toyota part number 04562-89101) that should be installed with the windshield.
It helps if you could find one already cracked off a truck in the wrecking yards, and then practice on that. I've learned, you just have to take your time. Be sure to thoroughly cut through the rubber and sealant before gently and evenly push the windshield out.
u gonna need this. http://www.technologylk.com/crl-windshield-removal-kit-lk-S21400.htm?src=froogle .u could use piano wire instead but thats supa old sku and kinda treacherous. u can get tha primer and urethane from ace auto glass.. imo i would jus pay tha extra penny and let ace do it.theyll go to ur house and remove it let u do tha body work and slap it back on wen your ready. tha works garanteed.no leaks an if they broke um they give u a new one
^^^Ditto Call around...plenty guys do mobile glass service. Just have them remove it and then call them back when you ready to put it back on. I worked bodyshop for years and we always called the glass shop to remove and install glass even if the windshield was allready broken. If you want to learn to do it yourself then thats great but believe me, you going be sick if you see a line go across your windshield because of installation or removal errors.
I did extensive rust repairs on my '79 and had to put in the new windshield myself. If I had the choice I would pay someone to do it, but $100 sounds like a bit much. The cheapest place around here (which also happens to be at the local pick n pull) charges $50 for the install and they do a good job. I guess a mobile deal would be more expensive though.
thanks guys for all the extra info. but i already have an oem glass at my house and i called ace and everywhere else but ace auto glass was the most expensive to just install. the cheapest i found was $100 flat, and my windsheild is already cracked. ill try ask ace for the primer and urethane i never know they would sell that kind stuff to the public. thanks for the info. btw badlux what is that kit? is it glue or somthing?
i removed the window from the 86 myself... after about 1 1/2 hours of cutting and removing the rubber, it cracked with about 3" to go.. but it was fun smashin the hell outta the window to relieve the stress it caused
Not really sure....I met this guy that told me about it and really recommended it when replacing the windshield. If you look from the outside looking in between the windsheild and the body, you will see like another flat rubber.
I watched the guy who did my windshield. cutting the rubber throughly is something that has to be done with great pressure, so you can get it all out. he got my busted windshield out. kinda thought about it maybe i shouldve left my grille chrome... no big deal
why does the windsheild have tape at the end? is it to hold it in place while the urethane cures? btw im taking pics of the project that ive already started it doesn't look nice but my brother and i are determinded to kill the cancer with por15. and sheet metal. look in the build thread for pics some time in the next few days.
exactly. it keeps the glass from popping up while the glue dries. usually only needs a day, or overnight. its funny seeing people never take the tape off. haha.
tapes probly on there to keep the moldings in place.the guy who removed it probly broke the clips that hold it down.no biggie jus shoot sum urethane in the gap, set the moldings then tape it up
Hahaha, some people dont understand the tape thing and leave it on forever! there's some spots in the urethane that isnt fully "sealed". like its sealed but some spots need some more... I'm OCD with my windows lol. good to know you and your brother are making progress!
