......show off your welding hoods.... mine: custom sharpie overlay on my miller auto darkening and multishade hood
That's pretty awesome man! Here's mine. A Radnor and a Miller. These things have been squeezed between the cement floor and truck frames more than I can count. The finish is holding up great.
My Miller. I've been using it for 6 or 7 years now. Wouldn't mind getting a big window unit, but can't justify the cost.... It still works great. Just picked up a big window fixed for my 7 year old son. He's getting interested in laying beads now....
I got lucky...my wife bought my Radnor for me for Christmas a long time ago, I think it was in the $200+ range. Then I was doing a c-notch on a 80 something truck, and the guy just GAVE me that Miller, brand new in the box. It was over $400. I kept it as backup for a few years. The Radnor finally started acting up and I can't find a battery on it anywhere, so I switched over to the Miller and actually like it better due to it's larger window. It did however cost me $15 for 2 new batteries to bring it back to life. It sucks that good helmets are so damn expensive!
A friend of mine painted his with some color transitioning paint, so depending on how you looked at it it was green or purple. it was actually pretty cool!
The problem with fancy helmets is when you really have to cram it down into crazy areas and get down and dirty. It's one thing to be jammed into a tight area with a light, welding torch, using the rear axle as a pillow, extension cords everywhere, kinking your neck and finally get into position to weld, then you have to put the helmet on and ram it up between frame pieces and sometimes the floor. It's like a 4x4 with a nice paint job, do you keep it in the mall parking lot, or take it through the brush and say F-it? The first few gouges hurt but then it's just another tool after that.
He didnt care if it got messed up, he just wanted to see what it would look like.. He used plastic adhesion promoter since it was car paint but it still ended up flaking..
Some glow in the dark paint would be cool. Do a design or full coat. More you weld the more it glows.
