Paid a visit to a local PNP today and came across an 82' Toyota MKII Celica Supra with 170K and a W58 tranny behind a 5M. Looking at the fluid it was pretty clean, and without a burning smell to it.

Looking at the car, it had a bent rear axle and on the same side both wheels were pretty much demolished. Some of the bodywork on the lower portion of that side was banged up as well.

So, I figured this car had to be "moving forward" and must have hit a curb at high speeds. So in theory - it was a working/running tranny.

Goes into all gears smoothly/easily and no excessive play with the input shaft. Even spinning the shaft and "listening" for anything weird - nothing.

Took me a good two hours to get it off the car by myself. First timer. But for $154 out the door, which included the shifter, tranny mount, slave, knob, and rubber boot with metal plate, it was all worth the effort.

    Anyhow, my questions are:

For those of you who have swapped this transmission into your vehicles with either a 20R and/or 22R...

What clutch master cylinder and slave did you use?

Did you have to alter your CMS and slave plumbing for the W58?

What clutch did you use with the W58?

I had considered pulling the clutch off the car as well, but to be honest I don't know how to "look" at a clutch to see whether or not it's still a good one.

Did you use your original clutch and if so, for what transmission was that clutch originally for?

Looking up pricing for a clutch kit for an 82' Celica Supra, I found that they are in the $150-$200 range. Yikes.

Should I go back and get the clutch? :)

The slave and the clutch master cylinder look to have been replaced fairly recently. I found the previous owner's name and address on a recent Comcast bill that was in the car - tempted to ask the previous owner the history behind the car, particularly the transmission.

I dont think that tranny is going to work for you... my celica tranny bolted right on and needed the old tranny mount from the celica to fit...

The 82-85', 3rd generation Celicas came with a W58 behind a 21R/22R/22RE. Therefore, their bell housings are direct swaps to anything with a 20R and 22R.

The 82'-86' Mark II Celica Supra (from what I pulled mine from today) came with a W58, but behind a 5M, therefore MAY NOT (yet to be confirmed) be a direct bolt-on swap - because of the bell housing.

I would just need to find a compatible bell housing (W55/56 or W58 - 3rd Gen Celica).

From what I have gathered with all my research, these trannies are very stout (just behind the R154). Here's a link to a "first hand" review:

    http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cach...ml+w58+transmissions&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us

And by the way, realized that the bolt pattern for the clutch would probably be totally different on a 5M than it is on a 22R.

o.k. question. will the 5 speed tranny behind a 7m-gte work with a 22r. i found a 5 speed today for $60 at pick n pull today. also i found an 82/83 yota on craigslist today for 300. needs a tranny and a waterpump. i will know next friday if i'm getting it. if the tranny behind the 7m will work (w58?) i will just buy that one.

You will more than likely be in the same boat as I'm in, and have to find a bell housing that will mate up to the 22R. I'm going to try and find a W55/56 aluminum bell housing to match up to my W58 - which isn't a big deal.

    $60???

Sh*t, I'd be all over that (especially if it was in decent shape) AND the $300 Yota!

There's a good chance it has a W58 behind it, too. :) Maybe. I believe it was the 86' Cressidas with the 5M's that had the W58s.

There was one in the yard I was in today, but i totally forgot to check it out. Going back tomorrow just to see how many miles are on that one.

I really need to drive down to your place one of these days and have you take me to YOUR PNP.

Breakfast and lunch on me, especially if I'm coming home with $30 W58's!

    :D

i love my pick n pull. but honestly i don't go looking for anything specific. the only time i went looking for a specific item i was let down. the day i found my 2jz i was walking thru the imports and glanced up and seen the emissions tag of the lexus. in the split second i seen it the 2jz jumped out. i always check minitrucks, and imports. i also found a mr2 with some seats that would work good for my 79 yota. last week i pulled a set of buckets from an infiniti. $20 a piece for full power, heated, genuine leather seats. i was happy, until i got home and tried them in the 79. it jams me into the steering wheel. so now they're in my s-10!

Went back to the PNP today.

Man, I love that place. Where else can you go and take sh*t apart to learn.....and it only costs you $2 and some effort. :)

I found an 85' Celica with a W58 behind a 22RE. Though this car didn't look like it was in a wreck so I was kinda leery of taking the tranny. Plus it looked more "racer" customized as opposed to the bone stock Supra I pulled the tranny from yesterday. Plus it had 208k miles as opposed to the 170k on the 82' transmission.

Still......I needed the bell housing. :D

Again, it took me 2hrs by myself to pull down the transmission. It's the two bolts up top, just behind the head, that will cause you the most trouble. Either way, I eventually got them loose and brought that puppy down.

It was a breeze removing the bell housing. ($40)

The one on the LEFT is the bolt pattern for the 2Xr. The one on the RIGHT is the 5M. :D

Always remove those before anything else. If you drop the trans mount first, they're murder.

On the 82' Celica-Supra I did the top bolts, first, before dropping the tranny mount. But the 5M seemed to give you more room for the top bolts than a 22RE did.

Today, on the 85' Celica/22RE, I loosened all the bolts except for the two behind the head....

Dropped the tranny mount and let the tranny hang a lil.....

...then I removed all the bolts I loosened earlier - by hand, and then worked on the last two bolts up top with an extension, before shaking the tranny loose.

I should have been more clear. It was tough because it was the first time I had done it this way. It took me a minute to figure out that though it's tight to fit a ratchet and extension to get the two top bolts off, just barely enough room for 1-2 "clicks" - but with some patience those clicks were all that was needed, really.

Though I did try for the sake of trying (2 top bolts, first), but just could not get a wrench and socket in there, whether it be from up top or down below, with the tranny's tail still bolted up.

Last night, I had read online where someone actually did it by lowering the tail, first, and found it easier to access all the bolts - hence my going that route, today.

the top 2 bolts are the worst bolts on the whole truck.

id rather take the eng/tran out in 1 piece then do those.

17mm flex head ratchet wrench is what i use when its still in the car.

When you take it out as "one piece", am I correct in assuming not only the grill assembly is disassembled but the fenders as well?

What if I'm still in the process of "test fitting" the tranny?
