Well I've been researching the W58 tranny as I'd like to swap my 4 speed tranny with it. I'm not a mechanic and have only very basic self taught experience with this stuff. From what I understand I would need to: Use my existing bell housing. Adjust or make a new tranny mount. Possibly trim shifter area to fit. I have a mechanical speedometer so do I need to find a tranny with a mechanical speedo cable or would I be able to put one in place of the electric one? Another issue I have is that the junk yards around me that actually have a wide selection of vehicles usually pull engine and transmissions out and put them on a shelf. So I have to take their word for whatever it came off of. I also doubt it will come complete with shifter. Would my existing truck shifter work or would I definately need one that originally mated with the W58? Any other tips for when I go out on the hunt? M
So from my swap here is what I did. I used my bellhousing and rear tailshaft. This kept the shifter in the stock location. I swapped my reverse switch and speed sensor over (non mechanical) . Also replace my tailshaft seal while I had it apart. I'm unsure on the speed senor swap. Also i dont know of any easy way to identify a w58 other then what the shifter looks like and or read the tag under the hood. Hope this helps you out
So your W58 had an electric speed sensor, but you used your truck's electric speed sensor in it's place. Am I understanding that correctly? Thanks for the help.
The senders don't matter. Remove one style, install the other in its place. A 4 speed tail housing won't fit on a 5 speed trans. 5th gear is in the tail of the trans. I have done the exact swap you're looking to do. I'll get a pic of how I modified the trans mount next time I have the truck in the air. All I did was turn the mount on the trans around 180* since the mount has some offset built into it that let the forward bolt holes in the mount line up with the rear holes in the steel bolt on mount on the cross member. I measured the bolt spacing and drilled the steel mount then pie cut it to make the mount area flat and welded it back together. It made life easy doing it that was rather than build a steel mount from scratch plus if for whatever reason I wanted to go back to the 4 speed it'll bolt right in. My W58 is from an 83 supra. I used the stock 4 speed bell housing and all related clutch parts. I had to notch the floor back about an inch for the shifter to come through.
Yeah I read about this in your thread and was planning on attempting it. Especially because of being able to reverse it if I needed to put the old 4 speed in it. Pictures would be awesome. Thanks for all the tips so far guys. I may be going out tomorrow to see what is available.
Awesome, thanks WT. I didn't have any luck at the first couple of yards I went to. Actually the first one was trying to sell me an off the shelf tranny that came out of a 92 celica. It didn't even look like what I've seen W58s look like. He kept insisting that it would fit and even showed me the computer program that said they were interchangeable. I told him thanks, but I really wanted one out of an SC300 not just one that was compatible with it. The other yard was a no go. Finally at the third yard, this guy had an 82 celica supra. The tranny was still attached. So I went for it. Got it for $350. I hope I didn't over pay too much. I don't know what these things run for anyways. Here is a pick of it after a little degreasing and hose down. I didn't focus on the bell housing as I understand that has to be swapped with the one on my truck anyways.
I'd swap the input and output seals while you have it out. I have the input seal part number at the shop I work in but the output is the same as 4wd transfer cases etc. National seal part number 223840. Its never a bad idea to change the shifter seat bushings too. I don't think you got hurt on the price so long as it's in good shape.
I dont know why but, I have a really hard time remembering what trans is what and what came with what vehicle. What is a 2wd 5spd. What is a 4x4 5spd. What came in a pickup and what came in a supra. What years were different. Ive spent a few hours doing research for engine swaps but when it comes to the trans... not a damn clue.
Post 1983 it's pretty basic. G40 is the common 4 speed 2 wheel drive trans. W55 is the common 5 speed 2 wheel drive trans. Carb'd 4 wheel drive got a G52 5 speed. W56 is the normal 4 wheel drive 22re trans that came in a bunch of shifter configurations for the trans and t case. There is a G54 that came behind 22re's that also has a chain drive t case more akin to the V6 type case that is good for a dd but junk for wheeling since you can't put dual t cases behind it.

WT, would you happen to have the part number for the input seal? I have the output on order and it should get here tomorrow. The shifter bushing, I'm thinking should be bought from Toyota or is there a better source? I was looking at this place: w58bushings.com Thanks again.
Ok, I just drained the fluid and changed the rear seal. Still waiting on a shifter bushing kit since mine had broken apart into a little pile of plastic pieces. There were metal pieces but it looks like they were all from the metal ring around the shifter bushing. The lower part of it had broken and fallen in. I've magneted most of it out already. I want to do a fluid flush. Should I just get some cheap tranny fluid run it for a bit then drain it? Or would anyone have any suggestions on how to do a good flush?
Sorry for the delay, it's a 1981 national seal. Oriellys had them in stock when I needed them. My trans had the same bad bushing. I found a place online that had aluminum replacements but the hell if I can find them now. I used a chunk of scrap pipe that had the right ID and welded it in. Kinda ghetto but it won't fail.
Does anyone have any info on this? I also have a 4speed and Im swapping a w58 with the 1UZ. My w58 came with the OEM shifter but I like the height where the shifter is at now and I would think you would have to reach more for the w58 shifter.
