I put a breather filter on the forward port of the valve cover, the weber is hooked up to the PCV valve, and the front vent filter spits oil, not a lot, but after I drive it 30-40 miles, I always wipe residual off the valve cover. Couple of thoughts, its a bran new rebuild and I couldn't be happier with the performance and how smooth it runs. It runs better and better each day. The oil PSI spikes until the relief valve opens then its fine, never over 80PSI before it drops back down to 60-70 psi. I am 600+ miles into the break in and the oil has already been changed. I also have ZDDP additive in the oil to assist in the break in... here is the pic of the set up, so I am curious why the oil blow out of that front filter???? Isn't the design to suck out the PCV and vent from the front port? I certainly don't like oil, not even one drop, where it isn't supposed to be. Any thoughts would be appreciated. The valve cover has the vented oil shield installed and I am not sure how oil is getting to that front filter to begin with unless the pressure is so good that it is finding a way... Need some expertise out there to help me out. Cheers!
While cruising there is plenty of vacuum to keep the pcv valve open and sucking the crankcase gasses out and fresh air through the breather. When under full or heavy throttle there isn't as much vacuum so the crankcase gasses go out the filter. I have the same setup and its just a fact of life. I thought about making a direct return to crank case setup with a filter on it so the issue goes away but it doesn't bother me enough to fix it.
I had this same problem but now since I got some cheap filters from ebay the filter cathes da oil instead of spitting it out
Breather is not large enough and it sits very close to the inside valve cover baffle. Try larger breather or install a longer hose to the breather.
Thanks for the input, much appreciated... Not sure what I will do???? Do not want to put a line back on that front port, there isn't much room to increase the distance with a hose entension... I will figure something out thought because the oil outside the engine is not going to work for me... HOWEVER, those pics that were posted of those engine bays are kick A@@!!!!!!!! Nice work! People after my heart as I love "meching" on engines!!!! Need to start a post with nothing but engine pics! cheers!
I have the K&N filter on the front of the valve cover. I generally wipe the area like once a year or so since there is very little oil in this area. Rick BTW, nice looking engine bay
I had same problem until I switched to my ghetto catch can system during auto cross that thing would spit up a fine mist of oil making my engine bay smell no PVC valve just straight hoses to a catch can
Rick and Scrub (and everyone else), thanks for the tid-bits on this small issue. Appreciate the kudos to the engine, I am "retentive" as they get and the kind words makes it all worth it, although not why I do it. I looked at the K&N filter today and am worried about the clearance to the hood plus the diameter of the attaching point looks WAY big for the port on the valve cover. I am two weeks from retiring from the military and have to move ONE LAST TIME, so this issue will have to wait (probably will drive me crazy enough that I will fix it anyways) but I will look at the options for the larger filter. I DO like that catch can solution gig, not sure I could bring myself to that but its as pragmatic (functional) as it gets!!!!! I love TRUE mechs and only true mechs would have an engine bay like Scrub's, with a catch can hidden as to not detract from the nice looking engine!!! Totally sweet! Cheers to you all, too bad this country is so damn big, I would love to see every one of the minis on this site in one place... r/ bake
Thanks for the kind words thank goodness that's an old pick and all the loose wires and tid bits are no longer visible as well as the fuel regulator switched to black hoses a little smaller if I can get mine as detailed and on cue with your 78 I'd be set ..This might not work but if u stuff the inside of your small breather filter with a medium coarse steel wool it may slow down the oil seepage . Not to much tho just a off the wall idea Congratulations on your retirement . beer toast
You are so welcome! Were you looking at this K&N filter? K&N Breather - 2" Diameter With 1" Rubber Base Keep us posted after you move! Rick
I fixed my issue awhile back. This thread made me decide what to do with the catch can I bought cheap a few years ago. Works like a charm and it has a drain valve on the bottom to drain any excessive oil vapor.
WT, that is a good looking catch can... I have been busy trying to get moved but I managed to find the time to address the "oil blow" out of that filter. I removed the valve cover to get the final valve adjustment after rebuild and while in there I took the oil shield off the inside of the valve cover. I found the most coarse steel wool and filled the cavity right below the breather hole. The oil shield has these great baffles and it worked perfectly. It doesnt blow oil anymore but there is a little itty bitty spot where the oil exists at the base of the filter. So, for me it is fixed until I can get that same can you have. I like that solution better! Where did you get that catch can??? Thanks for the reply! best regards and CHEERS as always!
Thanks, I am just happy to have fixed the issue. The fact that it looks good is just a bonus. Holy crap I guess I got a better deal than I thought. I paid $20 shipped, it was new just dusty from laying around. JAZ Products 605-025-01 JAZ 1-Quart Breather Tanks
Yea that's a deal I have similar catch can damn thing was forty five dollars .not including hoses and what not. Jegs and summit also have a large selection of cans
Roger... my 78 will be a daily driver real soon and I will post pics when I get it done and installed! I have to get the rest of the emisions stuff off the truck with the addition of headers and then there will be room to clean up that area of the engine bay. After that I will add the catch can... Thanks for the input and I will catch you all later, moving truck loads my house tomorrow and then the fun task of setting up a damn house for the 17th time in 25 years! thank god its the last time!!! Navy has been a good ride but living the life of a gypsie sucks the fat one! Cheers!
