I was just curious, but when you guys do your valve adjustments, especially on vehicles you know haven't had one done in quite awhile, is there a tendency for everything to tighten up, loosen up, or both?

Tonight was only my second time doing one on a 2XR motor, so needless to say, my experience with their valve train is limited.

Going by OEM specs, a lot of mine were way too tight. I'm not sure if that's just from years of neglect, or the person before me was just going by some off the wall numbers.

i set mine to .008 for intake and .010 for exhaust (i have a 22RE...) but most of them were pretty good and tight...

except for exhaust #4.. that was way too loose...

most neglected ones i come across are usually a lil on the loose side. cept the low miliage ones, they tend to be a lil on the tight side.

it could also be someone adjusting the valves wiht a cold motor, then you are checking it while hot, so with everything expanding its a lil tight.

Well if you are doing them cold that could also cause them to be on the tight side. I'm not sure how you do them, but they should be done hot. That means run the engine until operating temp and then shut it off, and take valve cover off and adjust away.
