I have a 1989 Toyota truck with the 22r engine in it. My question is, is it supposed to have a 4 speed manual transmission or a 5 speed? Right now i only have four gears and it does not go in reverse and doesnt like going into first when i stop.

 

Best way to check is if you look in the door jam the id tag will have your trans code. Tell what it reads and we can tell you.

G40 4 spd same as me so does it grind in first and reverse

 

Yeah it grinds. do i need a new clutch? and can i swap a 5 speed in?

 

Yea u can swap a five speed in popular thing to do on these trucks believe the w56 is what most go for

And your grinding maybe do to a worn gears you could try a new clutch and throw out bearing but possible rebuild it's not to expensive considering modern trans rebuilds

 

What is the w56 out of?

 

They came 84-88 in the trucks and 4 runners t100s the w55 is similar also came in 80 85 Celicas And some trucks from what I've herd

 

How much would a rebuild for my trans be?
