Boring a cylinder is usually only done to square up the cylinder walls. The displacement gained is minimal (really), and how far the cylinder gets bored is usually determined by the machinist when he measures the taper of the cylinder.

I usually drop the block off to my local shop, and they tell me what size pistons and bearings to order. Takes a few extra days, but better than ordering the wrong stuff.

I do the same as Litneon. I drop off the block at the machine shop, they determine how much it needs to be bored out, order the pistons, measure the pistons, then bore the cylinders accordingly to make a fit. For example, the engine I put in my 89 had sat for a long time, and had rust on the cylinder walls, had to be bored 0.040" over. The engine I put in my 4Runner only had to be bored 0.020"
