Hey guys, I'm thinking of upgrading my rear shocks to Bilstein HD shocks but I have a question about the ones on my truck currently. They don't seem to be stock ones that are similar to the KYBs or Bilsteins, instead it looks like really old yellow coil shocks. Any idea if those are somehow stock? I'm thinking it would be good to upgrade from them but is there any reason you think I shouldn't?

Ill upload a picture later since I don't have my camera with me atm.

Originally thought about getting the KYBs since they were like $50/ea but I decided that $77 /ea wasn't too much more $$ but a much better shock.

Actually I have 3 leafs..it's just the angle of the picture - the 2 long leafs are clamped together, then the short one you see in the picture. Are those shocks stock?

My guess would be that those were marketed and sold as a "load leveling helper spring" for heavy loads or heavy trailers. Do you know if the truck was used as a truck at any point in time?

I know the PO used it as his painting work truck.

that could be why they're there. I used to paint as well, and I can tell you right now, ladders, gallons and gallons of paint, drop cloths and the like REALLY add up to tremendous amount of weight. How stiff are those springs?

Someone on Toyota Mini's here installed some of those "helper coil springs" on his lowered Toy but he had a leaf removed.

and yeah infiniti, I definitely see the other leaf now.

The difference between stock shocks and the kyb / bilstein is the stocks are twin tube and the kyb / bilstein are mono tube design. The difference between the kyb gasadjust and and bilstein is maybe valving but for the most part they are the same, both are great shocks. Dont be decieved by the pep boys retards, kyb also makes twin tubes, make sure the kyb's are the gasadjust or mono max.:waytogo:
