Ok, guys, this is the first time I've ever tried doing this on this motor (22R). All I want to do is replace the exhaust manifold gasket. Already removed the front portion of the heatshield and all the bolts holding the header to the block, but I still can't seem to pull the header away from the head. There's a bar or pipe that the header is bolted to that runs along the top of the header, and seems to go down behind the motor along the firewall. I'm not 100% sure what it is. But whatever it is, it's keeping me from getting the header off. Also, just to replace the exhaust gasket, do I also need to remove it at the down pipe, as well? Thanks for your help guys.
Ok...on the 22RE engine that tube is called the "secondary air injection manifold". It runs along the top of the exhaust manifold & back behind the head along the firewall. Im sure its the same part on your truck & looking at a Toyota manual it says to remove the tube that runs along the manifold in order to remove the manifold. As for the down pipe I would say unbolt it just to make sure youve got enough room to back the manifold off the head.
if you seperate the manifold from the down pipe, be sure to get a new O gasket for it. i like to remove the bracket at the tranny, or loosen it. then take one of the hanger bands off, farther down. then you can rotate the whole thing out of the way.
ok i got a question about that "secondary air injection manifold", can it be remove or deleted i guess, what does it do? what is it for? i hate the look of it and i wanna put another header on my truck, what should i do? and up here in ontario canada we have this stupid emmissions test.
Thanks, guys. Each of your responses helped a lot. But boy was it a b*tch putting getting that "secondary air injection manifold" back into it's rubber hose!
u can take that pipe off and put block plates there. but u have emission testing i dont think it would be wise to take it off..
hi want to know if its possible to reuse an exhaust manifold gasket? some says no because they said that it has already experienced high temperature.. is this true?...
As most of you know the 20r's and 22r's are famous for leaking exhaust manifold gaskets. Some can be a real b***h to stop from leaking. In the past I have actually doubled up an exhaust manifold gasket to get them to stop leaking. It worked like a charm. Just thought I'd share that tip.
i beg to differ. they are not famous for exhaust leaks, but it is very common for the hardware to fall out. usually the stud backs out and you tighten it down till the nut stops at the shank, feels tight but isnt. you gotta put the stud in with lock-tight and clean threads, then put the nut on. plus the newest 2xr is 15yrs old, and a ton of them have the original gaskets with missing bolts
Ya that's what I meant by that comment, not that the manifold itself leaks. I've had a few where the studs have fallen out or someone else has stripped them trying to overtighten. This is when I've used double gasket to stop the slight leak I still had because I was missing a stud.
any stud from ANY 2xr 2tc or pretty much any toyota motor will work. so will the hardware for the starter. that stuff is free by the pocket full at any junkyard. using 2 gaskets isnt fixing it.
