I have a '73 Hilux w/ an 18rc engine, according to Haynes manual it has an L40 tranny that I would like to replace w/ an automatic or a 5-speed. I heard an automatic was offered in 1973 for the 18rc, is this true? if so, what model # is it? Also, if I elect to go w/ a 5-speed, what model # and year would fit? What about mounts and modifications? And finally, good places to find used trannys? Thank You.
id look at old corona's and celica's. most hilux's had a manual where the corona almost always had a auto.
if your auto is a A40 and the donor celica is a 82-85 with a W58 yes it should work, it did in my corona. but i also changed the motor to a 20rish that may of changed the bellhousing location a bit. if your not opposed to having a driveline legnthened or shortened then, yes it will work with a lil fab. the slip yoke will slide right in, splines are correct.
No, I have a 4spd I think, mine is a 73 with a 18r, I said I saw one in the junkyard that was a 74 with a auto, I was talking about putting a celica trans like you said, in mine and if I would have problems. I am probably going to buy this celica anyway just for 5spd and possible 20r swap, but this 18r runs so good.
I have a 71 hilux and also found a 70 corolla with the 8rc and it is a toyoglide and they are 2 speeds and have read that there are not so good and the MGP's are low 18-20 using these trannies. I took my 3RC 4 speed bell housing and drill a hole in it to mate it to a late 70's five speed tranny. the 5 speed is an aluminum front and rear with a cast iron center section and the only thing I have to modify is the throw out inside diameter to fit on the five speed throat(1.5mm material to be removed).
When I bought my 74 HiLux someone had already swapped out the 18R and 4-speed for a late-70's 20R and W50 5-speed. The engine mounts and transmission crossmember appear to be the original. I do not know if the driveshaft was modified or changed, but I do not think so (it looks like the original stuff). The one mod you'll need to make is changing the hole in the tunnel where the shift lever comes through. Then when I swapped in a later (1980) W50 I had to move the hole location again (the length of the trans was the same, but the shifter was mounted further back). The 20/22 engine must be a little longer or it mounts a little more forward because the stock pulley-driven fan did not clear the radiator, so an electric fan was installed (engine swap or not, a good the to upgrade to anyways). One concern-- I have not researched it yet, but the differential ratio is different for the 4 versus 5 speed, and my speedo is not correct and the engine evs higher than I'd like. I have not tried to find a rear end from a 5-speed truck yet, but would like to.
Yea I would be interested in knowing the rear end ratio from the 4spd to the 5spd, im thinking of swapping in a 5spd as my 4spd is a little sticky to get into gears.
Im going to be picking up a 20r and a 5 speed tomorrow, sorry to thread jack, but does anyone know if there needs to be any modification to the trans or engine mounts to mount these in a 73 hilux? im also gonna need a gas tank for the fuel pump too right since the 18r had a mechanical right?
its a 73. Ive got the problem figured out though I think. Im going to be running an electric fuel pump and regulator, and running the return line into one of the "evap" line already on the tank. Im just going to disconnect the evap stuff since it really doesnt do anything anyways...
ah, i've got a 72 that has an aftermarket system on it, which put the fuel pump/filter up in the engine compartment. neat upgrade, makes everything a hell of a lot easier when i have to replace anything along those lines
ya this pump requires me to put it near the tank, but since this truck isn't slammed yet, its still fairly easy to get to. The pump also has a 25 micron filter just before the pump, and then i got my inline one in the engine bay, so 2 chances to plug up, but im not too worried about it. Are you running the 18R or 22R? I could use a pic of your engine mounts if you got the 22R swap in yours. Im going to be cutting mine monday to fit my motor in, and it would be nice to have something to reference a little.
rear end ratios the experience i have is that the 79 and 80 i have are 3.50 and the diesel is a 3.90 and my 71 is a 4.10 and the 4x4 4 spd is a 4.10 so my guess is that the ratio is a 4.10 with the 4 spd but i will check my books and repost if differnet
There is a tag under the hood, and on it should be a spot that says A/TM. Then at the end of the line, something like G082-W50. That would mean its an 8" rear end, 4.10 ratio, non-lsd. And has the W50 5 speed. There is a PDF chart in another thread about rear ends that decodes toyotas system of wording them. Very helpful.
Hey guys I am new here and looking into getting my first hilux. I have had Landcruisers for years!! Now I am looking for something a little more gas efficient as my DD... Got my sights set on a 74, hilux, and I was wondering about the original post. Is there a direct bolt on swap to the 18r that replaces the stock 4 speed with a 5 speed? I want the overdrive, as it adds to fuel efficiency, to be honest this is a real deal maker or breaker for me. Any input you guys have would be great. Thanks in advance!
any W series transmission will bolt to any R series engine, as long as the transmission came off an R series motor ( example W58 off a supra with the inline 6, you just need to change the bellhousing ) and more then likley you drive line should still fit too, mine did through 2 transmission swaps and one engine swap. You may want to check your rear end gearing though, i now have the 3.09 rear end with the W5 combo and I can only get into 5th gear at 75mph, which is cool, cept there is no torq on 5th gear and you have to have your foot so far into the pedal to keep it rolling that fast that it kills the MPG. im gonna swap in some 3.42's or 3.56's which ever i can find to help. I orignally had 4.10's and didnt like the freeway revs.
Awesome that is the complete direct answer I have been searching for. Thank you very much hopefully within the next few weeks I will have myself a hilux with a nice little weekend transmission project planned. Get me a W58, and roll with it.
