blah blah blah rabble rabble. god damn **** me! was doing a timing chain and head gasket on my 22r. get it all together and go to torque down the crankshaft bolt, and i hear a loud ass pop. didn't think anything of it till i went to turn the engine over by hand so i could drop the distributor in. the god damn son of a bitch chain somehow came off of the bottom sprocket wtf? this is a pain in my ass. im so over this truck right now! damn damn damn damn damn damn damn.
oh dude, tell me about it! i knew something was going to happen things appeared to go too smoothly. but man i really hate taking off that timing cover... and to top it off i have a bad back and its starting to get to me bending over the truck all day. I need a lift dammit!
im trying to think of how in the hell this happened. i mean the chain was tight, as it was semi-hard to get the camshaft gear on. maybe i put the crankgear on backwards? thats all i can think of. which way does it go?
the front is flush, the back has a little part that sticks out a tiny bit that pushes the gear towards the radiator... get what im saying ?
yea thats how i put it on though. with the shaft spacer thing pointing to the radiator. how the hell? dammit this has been the most complicated thing ive done with this truck. i want my jeep and honda back. they were so ****ing easy to work on.
I feel ya, I've had my engine apart twice. Sucks. I can't see how it came off either, check and see if the chain isn't broken, because that's the only thing I can think of. You didn't have to force it did you? Actually, did you check the timing marks? Try rotating the engine a few times (band and forth a little) and see if the marks go back to the right spots. That might have just been the air in the tensioner. Just a guess. Mine just made a hiss, but you never know, maybe yours was ****ed just a little bit and snapped into position.
well i looked down the front of the timing cover and you can clearly see that its off the bottom gear. i dont get it. it was fine before i went to torque down the crankshaft bolt cause i turned the engine over by hand a few times and everything went smooth. all i did was put it in gear, ebrake and chocked the wheels. got to tightening it and heard a clunk. so then i tried turning the engine over and no dice. it was like it was seized up. so i had to turn it backwards a tad to get it unstuck thats when i noticed something wasnt right. so now im sure i effed up the head gasket part that goes over the timing cover, can i just snip it off and use some sealant? and im pretty sure the oil pan is gonna leak too since its suck a tight fit i put sealant on it but it seems when i put the cover on it just scrapped it all off. man this is a ****ing nightmare
seriously, consider getting that truck to me and ill trade for my 92 ex cab lol.. also the timing gear on the bottom sounds like its backwards to me... re read your post and see if you see what im saying... the part that pushes the gear out should face the block to put the chain towards the radiator or timing cover.. and to anyone who thinks they have worst 22r luck then me, I am pretty positive im on my 6th 22r in my truck and it has about 15k miles more then when I bought it....
that sux about the gear... DO NOT CUT THE HEADGASGET OFF THE FRONT OF THE TIMING COVER!!! unless you like oil leaks....my friend did that...ya his motor puked oil even with silicon. ive gotten a couple in the shop like that too that they were horribly siliconed up and they were pukers too. take your time and try it again. beer helps the back feel better. Also i have lifts in my shop and i pretty much do this job with the truck on the ground so dont feel bad about not having a lift, you would be in the same position you are now.
well i already cut the head gasket :/ i wasnt paying attention when i was putting the timing cover back on and and with the new gasket it got boogered and crinkled to hell because its such a tight fit. i couldnt get it on without ****ing it up so i just cut it. guess i should do it right and get another gasket eh? i really really dont want to tear it all apart again though dammit. its such a pain in the ass all the **** that is bolted to the head and timing cover.
yes that is how it goes.... thats is the problem... bro do us all a favor, take it apart and take about 50 pictures at all angles so we can see what is good and whats not good.. trust me you will do the job twice as good and take half as long the second time.. i get better and better every time !
ah hell! the fsm i downloaded was pretty vague when it came to that point. it had a picture of that gear with an arrow saying front. but whats the front? lol dammit to hell!!!!! i think im gonna go ahead and get another head gasket, and leave the intake and **** on the head and just take off the exhaust manifold. this **** is killing me. im not working on it today too damn frustrated
new head gasket is a must. and I always leave the intake manifold on when I take the head off... you can always just pull the head off and set it to the side or lift it up and put some blocks under it to have enough room to work then set it back down with the new gasket... helps to have 1 or 2 people to lift some weight...also head should be put on after the timing cover
yea that would have helped a **** ton cuz like i said its a really tight fit with the head already on. and there was virtually no room and the head gasket got *****ed up in the process.
trust me ive done the same thing.. Ive broken everything there is to brake on these damn motors... I dont even know how many bad crank shafts, rods, head gaskets and other crap I have stacked up in my shed...
