Theres lots of stuff available on this subject. theres even a website called dipyourcar.com or something like that and deals with plasti-dipping entire cars. Theres a bunch of videos on youtube about it. From what I understand, the key to having it come out nice and protect well is good prep and multiple layers. I bought a can and once mother nature remembers were in the rocky mountains and not siberia and it warms up, I plan to experiment with it.
My brother did his entire WRX last year and there are a few cars floating around town that are plasti dipped. I can answer a few questions and my opinions.
Well it does hold up pretty good. The rubber is pretty tough and I have seen pictures of it protecting the paint in fender benders. I think it is neat to change up the color for cheap and being able to peel it off and shoot another color is way cool. My brother did a firebelly orange and it was sick when he did it but the color at the time did not have protection from sun and with in a week the top of his car was white. He peeled it off and did accents of black and looks pretty good and has protection from sun fading and still looks good. I thing I did not like was the look of it up close, it has a textured look and feels odd to me. I dont think I would be happy hanging my arm out the window and feeling that texture. It is easy to shoot and if you screw up and can peel back the area and start over.
lots of people here in houston rolling around with their whole cars plasti dipped. some just do wheels, others just the accents and grille. its an interesting look!
I agree with u all and thanks for the input! My buddy mark started doing his 92 civic hatch! He did just the faded out grey bumpers satin black. It looks ok he is going to do the whole car. I work next to a euro performance shop and there was a off white BMW in there shop. It was plasty dipped the car was a track car and he did it to protect his new paint. It looked ok from 20 ft but up close I'm not sure! It's a big topic in Knoxville I've seen hoods, roofs, spoilers, wheels and whole cars. I just wanted some of your opinions and thanks! I may play with it some! I'm eventually going shiny mirror finish black with Actual paint! I hope!
Yeah I have thought about doing some accents on my truck to get an idea of how it would look before forking out the money to have it done. I like the idea of little thinks like emblems and wheels or for protection but the entire car just doesnt fit me.
Biggest thing is prep and take your time. From grills, to wheels to complete body jobs...it can be done and look 100% professional if you're patient. Watch as many Dip Your Car YooooToob videos as possible.
Plastidip is rubber paint, essentially. Keep your cans warm. Clean surface to paint on. Don't sand a single thing, but I do have to say that smooth surfaces make it easier to peel off. Lay a light misty base coat. After that, lay down heavier, wet coats. (not super heavy to cause it to run). Plastidip isn't the same way of spraying like regular spray paint. Slower passes help, it's all about even coverage. The thicker coats help peeling it off. I like to laugh at the idiots who use plastidip and put light coats and listen to them bitch about how it's impossible to remove. I have plastidipped my front bumper, grille, corner lights, fender flares, valance, rear fender valances, visors, door handles, wiper arms, and a few other things. And wheels.
This was my first time using it, I did my tail lights and my corner lights. I had to peel half off in order for people to see that I was braking in the day time. And do what Nam said and do thicker coats, it was hard to remove the plasti dip from the corner lights because it was soo light.
We are going to do my buddies jeep yellow so then I think I'm going to do my truck I will post up some pics
