The sending unit should be next to the oil filter. Just unscrew it and screw in a new one.

yeah man it probably takes about as long to change a oil sending unit as it would to change an oil filter.

alright thanks guys. ive been out to the truck and found it. right where yall said. but heres my issue. i have an oil leak that i cant seem to track down. i originally thought that it ws the sending unit but i thought the sending unit was higher on the block. my leak is one the same side of the block and appears to be above the starter but below the egr. i have checked the back of the valve cover and its dry where it meets the head. i have to replace the egr as well and have pulled it trying to clean it. it couldnt be leaking from the egr could it? from what i know theyre just vacuum and not actually have oil through them. you guys have any idea on what could be causing this.?? this and a few small things are whats keeping me from driving my truck

the top right stud on the intake for the EGR could leak oil if it was loose, its the only hole that could on the head, besides the fuel pump.

it could be your head gasket but that is usually under the thermostat.

there is also a oil port on the block behind the oil filter for the dummy light sending unit, which is different from the gauge sender and usually both are on the motor.

yeah this seems like its coming from above the starter below the valve cover.
head gasket is a possibility and i it is missing a the top right bolt for egr but that happened afetr i noticed the leak when i tried cleaning the egr. and the amount of oil thats coming out is more than what would weep out of that hole.

its leaking bad enough that i could drive it for a day and it would leak roughly 2 quarts of oil

    its a 12x1.25 bolt.

same as all the intake bolts.

just go to the junkyard or your stash of bolts and snag one.

    aight cool.
i wasnt able to find that bolt so ill have to do some more searching

so am i safe to assume that there is nothing that could be leaking oil between the egr and starter?? other than possibly the head being loose or ... i dont have any idea. i had a friend stop by to look at doing some work on the house and he used to wrench some back in the day and he looked at it and said that he saw oil spitting/ spraying out where ever its coming out.

as shonuff mentioned...... if there is no bolt there holding the egr, its as good as having a hole in the side of the head....................... well, cus thats what it is....... a hole in the side of the head.

to make matters worse, thats the corner of the head that the oil runs down on and returns to the oil pan........ :doah:

in this pic you can see all the posible places for a oil leak behind the filter/above the starter/ below the egr.

the lil oil dummy light sending unit
the round verticle shaft for the oil drain from the head (aka head gasket)
and the only threaded hole on the intake that is open to oil (red straw)
