I HAD A VERY BAD LEAK ON MY 22RE, I DECIDED TO CHANGE THE GASKET, I BOUGHT THE PUTTY, IT WAS A PAIN TO GET DOWN AND UP, FINNALY I GOT IT BACK TOGETHER AND I HAVE A BIGGER LEAK !!!
I did mine about six months ago with the gasket seal stuff and it work fine. Just have to clean it very good before you apply them on.
Get the right gasket, hold in place with multi purpose grease and make several rounds around the pan before finishing off to the correct torque specs. there is different specs for different years so make sure you get the right torque specs. Make sure to look close at whether it is inch or foot #'s big difference! and watch your gasket as you start to get snug, you dont want to over tighten! Dont forget to use a little silicone at the timing cover corners and at the rear main corners.
Toyota dealers sell a black silicone liquid gasket. cost around $20.00 but it works great.clean mounting surfaces and it drys fast once you put the pan in. 20mins you can have the motor running.
