Have not had a chance to tear into it yet but have a question.

How loud can a timing chain get? And another note how loud can the valvetrain get?
I have alot of noise but it sounds like its coming from the top of the motor, (may not be) but seems like it.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

If the guides broke would be pretty loud cause the chain would be slapping around.
    Could also be valves

On a good running stock motor shouldnt really have any noise, or at least anything super loud and noticeably not be there.

With the hood closed, could it be mistaken for a bottom end issue? It still could be, but I'm not convinced yet, with the oil being free of any type of metal, even small "glitter" floating in the oil.

I suppose I am being premature here, being I have not had the valve cover off yet.

    Just thinkin out loud

Does it sound like a big rig engine?

I do not know how many miles are on the engine. The truck itself is 250 but I'm not going to assume the engine has that amount, or more or less. (learned that lesson years ago). I'm assuming the worst.

I bought the truck knowing it needed an engine. It's just the more I looked at it when I got it home it made me question the source of the sound. The PO did not seem very savy, for example he told me the pass. window did not work, and it turned out to be a stripped crank handle. (that seems pretty basic to me. Lol)

Thats why I posted the question of how much noise these things can make when they go bad.
I assume it will boil down to getting it in my shop and getting the vc off and start there.
As I stated earlier, I know I'm being premature by asking. Just thinking outloud.

A timing chain slap will sound aweful.

Loose valve adjustment will sound bad also. Just like a diesel.

Take off the valve cover, check the valve lash, and look down the front cover to see the guides. :waytogo:

After you pull of the valve cover.

You not going be able to see everything, but with a light you will be able to see enough to tell you if thats the problem.

I also sent you a message earlier, let me know.

should be simple. once that cover is off, you can see your valvetrain and the cam gear.

Dont tighten your valve cover to much i did that a while back and i heard the timing chain(i think) hitting the inside top of the valve cover, I loosened up the valve cover nuts and the noise disappeared :waytogo:

I'll be getting the truck in my shop in the next couple days and get the valve cover and see what I can come up with.
Thanks for the info everyone. I'll post up my findings and see what you guys think.

my truck had this hard gasket around the vc.
tighten too much and the rockers will hit the vc.

    UPDATE:

Well, I removed the valve cover, timing chain was perfect, not even remotely loose. The valve lash did not seem excessive. Went thru the motions for a "cold" adjustment just to see if there was any excessively loose and there was not.

Soo, looks like I will be removing the engine.

Need opinions, I have a 92 4x2, pretty much a turd, but the engine is perfect. It has 160k on it. I am thinking putting that motor in the 4x4, then fixing what is wrong with the knock, puttng it in the 4x2 and selling it.
I don't have unlimited funds to be putting a lot of money into a rebuild, that's my reasoning.

    Ideas?
