The igniter can go bad, just like any other electronic component. Check the condenser, the big cylidrical thing mounted on the side of the distributor, should replace it with the points. Check the connector between the distributor and the igniter, corrosion will kill it there. The igniter could have popped a capacitor, I've had that problem. If your igniter isn't potted you can open it up and look around. Caps are a simple fix, but I just used a 22R distributor and igniter when it happened last. If you have points you can consider bypassing the igniter altogether and just wire the points to the ground side of the coil. The regulator can be fixed, just need decent soldering skills. The contacts can be filed, to an extent, and most of the electronic components can be replaced. With the older electronics, unpotted electronics, can be repaired. Those little components are all marked well enough to get the right replacement values. Welcome to the world of being a Dr. Frankenstein, doing whatever it takes to bring your vehicle back to life.
Keep in mind, you might be able to find someone close to you that has enough experience to help. Let us know your general location, i.e. "Central CA, coast" area. Don't even have to get as close as your city, definately not your address.
I have some service manuals that detail how to test the ignitor and other ignition components. I’ll copy and post tomorrow morning (it’s now 12:30am on the east coast). The ignition switch setup is also suspect. If you’re close enough to home or a safe spot it might make more sense to have your truck towed there. At least you will have a place to work on it. Throwing money at the problem can get very expensive.
Grabbed what I could from the manuals. Your ignition system is a weird hybrid between points only and full electronic. You really need to invest in a multi tester to do proper troubleshooting. There are so many potential troubles with all the modifications done to your electrical system. I’m not sure where to start. You definitely need to find someone knowledgeable with these old trucks. Is the seller available to answer questions? Good luck, Fred Sorry about the uploads. Had to compress the photos to fit.
Could you take a pic of the wireing diagram of the whole harness if it's in there I got one but it sucks
I have several factory wiring diagrams for the 20R. They’re beat up a little but relatively clear. I sent you a dm with my cell #. It’s easier for me to do a document dump via text messaging rather than trying to format my uploads to fit this site. If you’re interested, shoot me a text. Fred
