Hey, I'm Rod. I live in Cincy and I have had many toyotas among my long list of vehicles (over 100). Currently I am working my newest edition... a 1992 xcab I just got fro $600. The 22re sounds great, the body is 99% rust free, and the A43D came with the pan off and a story of "It's junk". They say it just stopped at a light and "it was like being in neutral". After fooling with Toyo 4x4's for years I think this 2wd is great and well worth repairing/restoring and I'm damn glad to get hold of it. Now if I can just get hold of either a great trans guy (doubt it) or a great used Toyo trans (maybe) I'll be in business. I am curious to know if anyone has the specifics of what mods are needed to install an A340E in place of my A43D. or even the newer 6 speed auto? The A340E seems soo much easier to get parts for etc. I know I need a computer, wiring harness etc. but no idea if it works with my ecu or if I can make it work at all. It would be worth the bother to me. I plan to re-fit every aspect of the truck in time... don't we all.
Welcome to TM! You might be able to find some info but haven't heard of anyone swapping to a different tranny.
most swap to the A43D or swap to a manual. I think an A430E is just too much hassle. I'd go with a manual for efficiency and control and overall confidence.
xcab w/junk A43D The 5 speed swap is a fairly easy deal I'll admit. Sadly I drive too many hours a day delivering for work to run a 5 speed again, tears up my knee. Auto is a must. Seems like I'll have to go with a nice rebuild of my original. I'm leaning towards doing my own rebuild. How cool would that be! EVERYONE says "no way", "too complicated", etc. I think it could turn out to be a very satisfying experience. Or it could be a pile of springs and o-rings nightmare. How hard could it be? Judging by the monkeys at Cottman and AAmco it can't be rocket science. If I do take it on I will do a step by step with pics if anyone wants to see it. I can't find any such thing anywhere.
Lol, You have the guts to do it, so go for it. If it's an original transmission in the first place, try finding as much OEM quality or equivalent products to use in it. and some fresh proper fluid. I wonder if the clutches are gone. How do they replace those? I'm sure it's straight forward. In the mean while, try putting a fluid cooler if possible. Maybe get a A43DL from the Tacoma's? This version is the same, WITH a lock up converter for more efficiency. I've driven my dad's taco with the A43DL. It feels similar (maybe better since my truck's auto is BEAT to hell, thanks to me and more miles), but the way I know my auto's, both are very similar. So I say look at the A43DL if it's more attainable. it should be easy to find an original Toyota transmission. that's the best insight I can give you.
And the Toyota automatic transmission found in our trucks (A43D[L]) are all hydraulically ran, simpler by design.
cool! thanks for the info I was wondering about just that lock-up question. I thought tacos were electronic shifted transmissions, any idea what years are non-electronic A43DL's? I read 86-95 was A43D, so I guess it's after that? Thanks again this could help my salvage yard searches, they seem to know little about the details of what they have. A43DL Lock up is the way to go! Now I don't even want to rebuild mine.
A43D's and A43DL's are hydraulic from what I know. It's shifted by the throttle position cable ("Kickdown") and the governor in the rear of the transmission. The electronic version is the A43DE. I grabbed this from Wiki to make sure Toyota A transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A43D This transmission model is not electronically controlled. It is instead controlled by throttle position and also by a governor.
