hi guys, just joined as there seems to be a bit of info here i may find useful. and i will probably be asking alot of questions along the way. i bought a 68 rn10 lux a couple of months back, got it registered, and now use it as my daily. its in pretty decent nick for the age/price, so im quite happy. will try and add pics. hope you like it. i do. cheers, luke.
wow, super nice truck! always wanted that generation yota. my cultural ignorance will have me believe that down under the proper comment would be " loogat that sheila! shes a beaut!"
Thanks. yeah, unfortunately stereo types have ruined us. it would more along the lines of, "wow, awesome truck/ute". needs some work, have already fixed some issues. but its a decent ride.
That's more like it Sweet truck. Planning on leaving the flat bed alone? Some side stakes would be nice
Thanks, plans for the tray are to repaint the steel black, black marine carpet, stainless steel toolbox and new tail lights. I don't want to polish the wood as I will inevitably be carrying crap on it. if its polished, is be too pedantic about every little scratch.
Welcome, Luke! Your 1968 Ute looks good for its age. You came to the right place to ask questions & we look forward to answering them. Rick
thanks mate. it did have, but years ago, has been rteplaced with a rebuilt 12r. i need taller/longer diff gears, as im using 2nd gear as first, so i will try and sort that out soon. then i need to get the head redone to run unleaded fuel without the additive.
There was never lead in fuel in Japan, the valve and valve stem seals were all able to run lpg as the 12R as most early R engines had a lpg version factory. I found myself a Toyota stout and after doing an extensive daily internet search about them for a few years now picked up a few things on the early Toyota R engines and the early hilux. I understand but can not confirm just yet as the early hilux are simular to a lite stout and the diff centre, axles and drums might be interchangeable with 1990's hilux still, but the motor rpm and current ratios are for reasons such payload ability of one tonne uphill. Edit the only thing I might suggest is obtaining a 4K corolla carby as they should bolt on and have an anti dieseling solenoid that is ignition active and stops fuel through the idle jet when the ignition is turned off and prevents engine run on when the engine is hot on hot days, most Toyota engines had them in australia from the mid 70's
Cheers for the info. even on the hot days(last Tuesday was 42c in Sydney) no pre ignition. I was unaware of the no leaded fuel in Japan though. I figured an engine that old would just require it. and in regards to the diff ratios, I realise they were short for the 1t carrying ability, but most ill carry is maybe 100kg, so shouldnt affect it too much. have also been thinking about an sr20det swap. not sure yet, as I like the column shift. for now at least. and looking to put brakes from my skyline on the front, should be fairly easy, just the booster and master I'm figuring out.
I am a toyota person and have pondered a 4a engine, the basic 4a-c would love the diff ratio as is because the early R engines are low revving where the 4a are high revving. The stouts have the hand brake drum on the gearbox which due to certain reasons limits parting with them and 4a-c are easy to find now and once certain meshing of engine to gearbox and getting street legal then can come the 4a-ge and what can be done with them, in queensland a 4a requires no brake upgrade as it dose not exceed the 10% increase issue and once approved then it is easy to get the a-ge up grade approved and it's nice features. Four wheel disc brakes can be done with ford falcon discs and rotors only needing brackets to mount the calipers, but that might not be legal up front
Thanks for the info. won't be for a while yet. I mainly want to do the brakes for better pedal feel, so the missus can drive it. I'm happy to keep the rear drums, so thinking a later model hilux master, on a booster with the 4pot up front should possibly work. still doing research. going to have to talk to an engineer about it also.
Welcome I have not seen one of those in Australia? I have a Lite Stout with 5R in it . I have always run unleaded. Its never been a problem. I use 2nd as 1st to....
Thanks guys. if unleaded is ok, might give it a go. just didnt want to burn valves before I can afford to get the head done.
The only time I have found a burnt out valve was in a 3K corolla and that was because of vacuum leak caused by hose for the brake booster was hard and split. I have a passion for the suzuki two stroke and early f8a and f10a engine four wheel drives and have had the odd corolla engined one, after destroying (owning) around some 70 cars in my life (some now i wish i still had), the early R engines the 5R and 12R are my choice and I just like the stouts. In time I would like to obtain a SC14 supercharger to put on my 12R or one of my 5R with sole lpg, but I am in no rush to modify anything yet as I like what I have so far as is
