Hey fellas I am the new good on the block. All this is new to me so I'm gonna need some coaching about all this computer stuff. Not to mention attaching pics of the 93' toy that I'm gonna need help from you guys to build. This truck is being built in secrecy and will be given to my son on his 16th birthday(in 6 months). I have all kinda ideas and a ton of questions. It seems like there are alot of people out there that know very little about alot of things. After reading your forums and discussions I really believe you guys know what ya'll are talking about when it comes to yota's. OH! did i mention my age, probably don't need to the age of my son probably gave it away. Anyway howdy!
Welcome to TM! Where ya from? What are your plans for the truck, what are you looking to do? Looks like its already lowered...
Welcome to the forum! That truck looks like a great starting point. What are your ideas so far for the truck? I love the 89-95 body style personally. I think they look great lowered. There are also a ton of other mods out there though from mild to wild, many of which could easily be ruled out by budget alone. So what do you have in mind? I see you have six months to work on it, how about time and money? How much of that do you have? Beware the minitruck snowball effect! Modifications are addictive! Anyway, I look forward to seeing how you decide to modify the truck!
so far i have installed 3" blocks on rear, 2" drop spindles on front and pro comp-toxic shocks all around. With this setup the yota rides pretty darn smooth. I think this is as low as i want ot go.
There are just more features in the regular reply. Like smilies, polls, etc. Quick reply is just straight up text.
oh! ok so here it is: new paint(color?), wheels(size, color?), I was thinking about changing the light and lenses out to make everthing look clear. I also was told i could change the valance up to a different style. New mirrors by spyder, new wiper blades, sprayed bedliner with an electric/sliding bed cover, sound system, tint etc. I guess it depends on my budget of around $5,000.
4wd?? my big concern is over wheel fit. I think i am leaning towards the 16"/17" range and maybe something in the american racing brand, but was told there is very limited selection, like 2 or 3 because of year, bolt diameter and backspacing which i have no clue.
I changed my front clip to a 4wd front clip (fenders, grille, bumper & valance), like alot of people do with these trucks. You get a wider & I think a more agressive look. Plus, you can fit a wider wheel with no rubbing issues. Valance: some guys do a 4runner swap. You can do just the bumper/valance or the whole front end with some modification to the core. Wheels: The 2 common sizes on these are 17's & 18's. Here's my front clip:
Why do you say that? SCT93- That all sounds really good, and with that budget you should be able to make something really sweet out of that truck! Get to it! Where do we start? One thing I was thinking though, I know you are going for the whole surprise thing, but I was thinking you might want to consider bringing your son in on the truck build? Give him a chance to learn some mechanical/fabrication skills maybe, plus it would be a bonding thing, ya know? Just an idea... I could see just keeping it a surprise too and then working on it with him hopefully down the road sometime. I never really saw my dad pick up a wrench to work on a car. Well ok, maybe a time or two, but we definitely never built a truck/car/anything together. I just think it would be cool. You could also just keep it a surprise and then once you give it to him get him on here and I'll convince him to bodydrop it and airbag it and stuff and you guys will have plenty more work to do together!
Welcome to TM! Ok here are some answers to your questions. keep in mind this is only my personal opinion but I hope it helps in your project for your son. Paint, keep it as close to what it is now so it will match the color under the hood and the interior. I have seen white cars painted black on the outside and just looks tacky unless you tear the entire truck apart. so I recommend a darker color with a metallic or black flake. would look really nice and simple. 16 or 17 inch wheel is a good size. the bigger the rim the less tire you'll have which means rougher ride and you'll feel every bump in the road too, but it will handle better. less rim is the opposite of what I explained. Godfatherscustom has a website that sells valances/ air dams for the lower section of the front bumpers. they are around 200 dollars give or take. I have one on my truck. Your budget is more then enough to get what you need. Have fun building it and keep us updated with some pictures. Rodney
wow your one cool dad. i too think you should bring in your son so that itll be part of his project and he will have pride in driving it. you could ask for his opinion on parts and pretending its yours, once his day comes hand him the keys in as the surprise. with 5K you could do some damage. a different front 4runner or 4x4 chrome because thats the height your sticking with 17's would be perfect. a nice metallic grey, 20 % tint, flowmasters, and redo interior and sounds. gosh only if i had the money. good luck on the build
i agree with letting him in on it. my dad and me restored a 66 mustung for my first ride. we got it when i was 15, so i spent 6 months sitting in it dreaming...
