LOL Hoping for the best but expecting the worst...

I suspect Newsom will probably just veto it in the end to avoid pissing off the state's environmentalist voters. Don't forget, he's probably facing a recall election; there are a lot more of them (enviromentalists) than us (car modifiers)...

Very true. I mean this has come up before and gotten a veto so who knows what will happen this time.

at some point they have to look at it as maintaining automotive history alive rather than from the environmentalist standpoint.

sad to know that mid 70s - early 80s cars are rare because of this

Yeah, they had one last year which didn’t even go into hearing. It will be a miracle if this one passes.

They just need to make it 25 years or more. Emissions was eliminated in Washington because it really did nothing for the environment. It's on manufacturers to keep the emissions down. But im sure in cali if smog was eliminated tons of shops would close up. Lots of money in getting a car emissions ready. They aren't ready to give that up.

They propose it every year, and every year it is denied, don't get your hopes up.

We are more likely to get rid of Daylight savings than the Emissions laws in place.

Yup! All about the money.. I was watching the hearing and even an insurance company called in to support SMOG exemption only for collector vehicles and not all pre-83 vehicles so they can sell collector insurance.

Looks like they ended up not voting. They’re going to rewrite it to SMOG exemption for pre-83 collectors only.

Here is the link to hearing if anyone’s interested. Starts at 1hr 13mins

I wouldn't mind if they allowed it to apply only to collector cars as they are currently defined, which is mainly about limiting use. But, I doubt even that will pass. Unless they include a revision to the definition of "collector car" that is so restrictive (e.g., numbers matching, less than 300 in existence, running or not, minimum 95-point restoration, no mods, impossible to reproduce parts, etc.) that practically nothing falls under it.

Yea dude some of the criteria the cars have to meet to be collector cars is pretty ridiculous

I live in NC. Vehicles over 20 years old are exempt from emissions inspections. And if over 35 years old exempt from safety inspection.
It sounds crazy, but my 1978 gets renewed every year through the mail. No inspection or emissions required.
No danger I’d ever move to Cali.

There's other criteria other then a year for collectors plates? Here in Washington it's 30 years and that's it. Only reason I didn't get them is you can't haul or tow with them and really you can only drive it for display purposes.

last i remembered seeing was that the Vehicle has to be of a certain age or manufactured after a certain year, be "of historic significance", restriction on mileage per year and the vehicle is mainly driven for shows or parades, and i had read somewhere that the smog equipment had to be retained. All that on top of paying more for registration.

dont quote me on this all as being factual, i had read all this years ago when i considered it so idk if its changed

When I lived up in Mendocino and got my truck smogged they wanted proof of reaidency. I guess they have mich more leniant reatrictions than the bay area, so a lot of people try to go ip there to cheat local smog laws.

Now i'm in the bay, and really have no problems. Pass all tests with a good margin.
