Ok so I picked up a 91 4x4 for cheap. The engine needed to be overhauled. After pulling the motor out I discovered that I had a block and head with pop up pistons in it. It is an efi set up. My problem is after buying a timming chain set and going to put it in the chain is too short. I count 48 links on the one I have and 49 on the old one. Is this a standard 22re link chain(49)? Or is this a special block and I need a special chain? Is this what is called a laser block? This is my first time working with a efi so I didnt know the deck height on the block was taller. Also went to put on one of my spair timming covers to discover that it was also short so I wasted a new timing cover gasket.
Napa BTW when I went into Napa to get my timming chain set I gave him the year make and model. But I didnt keep my receipt so I'm screwed. I think it was like $108.
The early 22r used a tall block, tall head, configuration, it used a 98 (49x2) link timing chain, around mid to late 84 they changed to the laser block setup, a shorter block, shorter head, and a 96 (48x2) link chain, the laser block is easily identified by the machined boss on the drivers side of the block just about center on the oil pan rail, sorta looks like an 8 layed on its side, that was drilled and threaded and used in the RET engines for an oil return line from the turbo. If you have an EFI engine with a 98 link chain then its most likely from an earlier Celica possibly.
Damn chain! Thank you Nook. So my question is can I go to Napa and ask for a 22re timing chain and get a 98 link chain or are they also year specific for this taller block set up? What year can I specifically ask for to get a 98 link chain? Thanks again.
