Has anyone done a Water Pump job on a 22Re/4cycl/'91? I've got the Radiator out, and not sure where to start from here? Looking for something(belt adjuster?)to get the belts off, but maybe It's the fan/clutch are the items where I need to start, but I'm guessing.... Appreciate any experience offered.
I leave the radiator in but since it's already out that's ok. If you have power steering and/or air conditioning loosen the nut in the center of the idler pulley and turn the adjuster bolt that is perpendicular to the pulley counterclockwise until the belt(s) can be removed. Loosen both the upper and lower alternator bolts and remove the belt. Remove the 4 nuts holding the fan clutch to the water pump and remove the fan and pulley. Now you can access all the water pump bolts. Remove them paying attention to which hole they came from since some have different lengths. Clean the old gasket material off the timing cover and using a gasket likely supplied with the pump reverse the process.
And keep in mind that re torquing the bolts on the water pump isn't what you think it is. I think they only go to 6 or 7 foot pounds... They will easily strip.
They definitely strip way to easy.. next time I do mine I'm putting some inserts in so they hopefully won't as easily.
Great advice Thanks to those who offered help. Especially, the heads-up caution in re-tightening/torquing the bolts of the water pump itself. Haven't gotten to the job yet, My hands are full, Don't need any more problems....
I also like to use some sort of sealant like toyota fipg, that way i dont feel like snugging them down harder and it will still hopefully seal.
Idler Pulley Bearing Thanks all for your help, ultimately in the end, the problem was an idler pulley Bearing gone bad. Not the Water Pump. Very subtle rattle as it was shaken. Replaced all engine belts during this repair. Looks like hell at 262K now, 22RE good for another 50K, 100K, ??? Retirement anyway....
