Earlier this week, I started my truck and BOOM! I jumped out of the truck and I have dark dusty smoke raising between the cab/bed and out of the exhaust pipe. Meanwhile, all my neighbors came outside to investigate as it sounded like someone had been shot with a large gun.

Anyhow, I was spooked and took my wife's car. The next morning the truck started right up but I noticed that the exhaust was louder. I looked closer underneath the truck to find the muffler peeled open like a can of biscuits. What happened?

I had been driving the truck earlier that day without any issues or backfiring. My dad suspects the EGR valve may have gone bad and allowed gas to get in the exhaust system. Any other thoughts or ideas?

The reason why could be a few things. But old crimped mufflers will do that. Replace it with a welded style and you'll be good. It'll sound better too. Summit racing has house brand chambered units for like 25 bucks.

Maybe it rusted thin and got plugged up..

You can get a muffler at any part store.. Or just throw on a glasspack like I have:waytogo: has a nice sound IMO, not ricey and not too loud.

either old bad muffler or dumping excessive fuel into exhaust....

My new mechanic said my timing was a little off and a backfire is what blew the muffler. I'm gettng a new muffler tomorrow, plus finally getting the loose front end rebuilt. When the mechanic saw my truck, he said "cool Hilux" and asked if I would participate in their car show in December.

upon start up, there were probably some fumes in the muffler that ignited.

The muffler joined El Shaqeiloneal and dreamed of going to Kerplockistan to become a suicide bomber. But since he was attached to the rest of the exhaust system, he settled for taking out part of the infidel driveway. :p

My guess would be like the others: basically a backfire in the muffler along with weak joints.
