Has anyone installed an aftermarket moon roof in a pick-up. I occasionally see pics of mini trucks with a pop-up sunroof and was thinking about giving it a try. If you have can you post some pics and maybe a list of the steps. I assume that the most important part of the thing is to cut the hole strainght and not screw up the allignment. I think that there are companies that make aftermarket sunroof kits. if you have any links post those too please. Thanks
I took a factory pop up sunroof out of an 94 Toyota SR5 extra-cab over the summer. The glass had a crack in it, but Im planning to get a new glass & have it installed in my extra-cab by a local body shop. Ill see if I can find some aftermarket kits too.
I was able to find a few discussions on a Neon Forum or something like that. They were discussing a few brands of aftermarket sunroofs and one guy said he had an upholstry shop put one in (???). I just want to see if anyone has done it themself.
i parted out a 70s dodge a couple years ago. it had a decent sized pop up. i kept it. i installed it into my 92 standard cab truck. its pretty easy really. the cab roof is single wall with no bracing to be in the way. you measure a lot, cut the hole drop the top part in and then there is a big rectangle ring that clamps the top side to the bottom side. sandwiching the sheetmetal between the flanges. i used a bead of sealer in that as well to assure no leaks. i dont know what brand it was, but i could quickly pop the glass out and put it behind the passenger seat. id love to find the same design but larger for my 78. heres a few pics
and i cut the hole with a 3" air cutoff. if you just score it over and over, it will make the corner bends just fine. atleast for this one it did. i kept the metal too. for shaving stuff on my dodge.
Thats sick. I wonder if two side by side (turned the other way), front to back would fit on the roof. Im sure a extra cab roof would have enough space. That would be a sick design
Anyone had experience with an xcab yet???? I plan on having a sunroof that slides in with tilt also.... would be sooo neat
The sunroof Ive got in my shop is out of a 94 Toyota extra-cab, so its possible. You just have to install it before the rise in the roof/extra-cab!! Id like to install it in my truck cause it looks pretty cool & its something you dont see much.
The way I understand it moonroofs came as an option with the SR5 package. I have one in my 91. The first Toy I owned was a 79 4x4 and it had an aftermarket one that worked well and never leaked. I didn't install it though. The aftermarket ones can't be too hard to install, they usually come with templates for marking where to cut. The only tough thing is making sure you are center from side to side and positioned where you want it front to back. Double check your measurements before you cut and you'll be fine.
www.jcwhitney.com they have some and I was really thinking of getting one for mine, and maybe for my Rodeo too.
