Alright so ive been working on this truck for a while now and i really dont want to wire in a fuel pump if i dont need to. Now heres the question can i run a weber carb with a mechanical fuel pump? Ive read that the mech pump pulses and the weber doesnt really like that. Im planning on driving this truck almost every day and just want it to be efficient and reliable Wiring a pump in i can do no problem, just want to keep things simple
It will run fine, well mine does and haven't had a problem yet. Won't run to it full potential but it'll run and drive fine day to day. I feel the electric pump and regulator is just to get to run as efficient as possible.
I feel the same way. Il probably go electric with it at some point but for the purpose of getting it running a lil cheaper i might go mech
There is so much contradictory information out there on this subject its crazy. One carb place says you have to run a regulator, the next says regulators are worthless, then yet another says something else. It's hard to know who to trust! Me, I don't see a problem with a mechanical pump so long as it keeps the float bowl full. I ran a mechanical pump with a 32/36 for the last year and only recently replaced it with a good electric pump that runs at 4psi. Didn't notice a lick of difference in any area. I only switched because I needed a mechanical pump for my 84 and I had the electric pump sitting on the shelf so I put it on the 90 and used its mechanical pump on the 84 for a win/win.
See thats exactly why im confused. Because weber says an electric pump is a must too. Think il just run a mech pump. Theyre cheap enough. Just need to make sure the cam has the lobe for the pump
Yea and weber also sells a pressure regulator which according to some weber "specialists" is the worst idea since armor all on vinyl seats. The pump lobe bolts on so it's easy enough to add if it doesn't have it already anyway. One thing I think helped was my mechanical pump was a return style so it didn't just keep compounding pressure into the carb forcing the needle open flooding the engine. I have an offroad version of the 38/38 so it has the float bowl vented to the outside. I use that vent as the return to the tank, so far it's worked perfectly.
I've seen them stock with and without a return. My 90 base model was return style as was my 84 x cab base model. I'd have to assume it's a CA emissions thing.
Does it look like this one? Has 3 hose ports. Fuel Pump | 1990 Toyota Pickup 2WD (4 cyl) 4 Cylinders R 2.4L 2BL | AutoZone.com
Im guna hopefully start on this soon. I also need to work on the damn wire harness that has shorts all over the damn place
