Making a d-shaped stock steering wheel? Whats inside?

Because of my... Um... rather rotund mid-section, and Ommpa-Loompa height, I've been toying with the idea of installing a d-shaped steering wheel.
The problem is, with most of the steering wheels out there, the look makes you think that the "D" stands for douche-bag. They look cheap and "ricer'd out" with wild colors, buttons and weird grips. The others are wildly expensive ($350 and up) custom billet types that wouldn't fit with my fairly stock, "sleeper" concept that I'm going for.
Then I thought: Why not make one from a stock wheel? The wheels I've seen usually have a metal bar that makes up the steering wheels hoop. I don't see why the bottom part couldn't be cut away and have a straight or even inverted section welded in, in its place.
So, my question is, Has anyone seen what one of our steering wheels looks like without the padding and grip on it?
Has anyone done this type of mod before?
Thanks for any help, and if there's any interest in this, and I do it, I'll take pics and post a write up for it.

I've never seen a steering wheel like ours that was built like you described. The difficult part would be rewrapping it.

I haven't rebuilt a stock one but I made a top less aftermarket. Cut the 10 to 2 o clock section off. Rewrapped the missing foam with gold duct tape.

For a stock one, if you used a 2 spoke, you could make a cut at the 6pm spot, make a bend at 5 and 7 to flatten the base. Then reconnect the points after trimming a little off. Would only leave a small seam to cover up.

And almost any 79-95 Toyota car or truck wheels will fit your column. I had a few old types on my old 92. So maybe start with a different design than a standard truck one. Add to the effect.
