Making a 20r/22r sound like a Subaru?

I’ve been watching a lot of B16 and B20 civics with some UEL headers. They sound almost identical to any WRX/STi. Wondering if it is worth the time and money to fabricate a UEL header for the 22r that would have a similar sound to a Subaru boxer. Currently just have a long tube pacesetter header sitting on the wall because the mid pipe doesn’t fit over the torsion bar. I could give it a shot at making a UEL header, just wondering if anybody with some experience here could say whether or not it’s worth making one. Just sick of the air cleaner vacuum sound and want a bit more of an aggressive sound without just straight piping to get a 4 cylinder rice rocket.

Not worth it. Even Subaru is trying to get away from UELs these days. They used them because their cylinders are on opposite sides of the engine, but it causes temp issues on the cylinders with the longer tubes.

This is one of the better sounding 22r's. The resonator changes everything. In all reality a loud banging exhaust is only cool to you and not to 99% of other people listening to it. And afterfires can really make the 99% think highly of you. I remember being in about the elementary school and some kid would always get dropped off in a bug. You could hear that thing pop from blocks away. I would always laugh and comment to my friends how that car had problems. Couldn't imagine what I would think as a kid if I heard the brz f boys with their lean firecracker afterfires. Lol

I've been watching a lot of exhaust videos lately (trying to figure out what i'll do with mine) and loved the look of this header. I don't know if it adds a special rumble or not but it's unique for the 22r

I know that. Just kinda lame to be another guy on the road with a Subaru with the subie rumble. Rather stand out a bit.

Well I did it. I wanted a louder exhaust and no short tube/long tube setup sounds good to me. Every video I listened to wasn’t my cup of tea. So I made one up and UELs are controversial I know. But with a muffler delete and the UEL the truck pops, back fires, rumbles, and crackles now so I’m happy. For anyone interested in.. I used a pacesetter long tube header and cut it up like the picture.

I tabbed it up in one day using the long tube and some sections from the stock mid pipe

    Yeah...

Even better is a pair of synced, twin-choke side draft carbs (mikuni phh, weber dcoe, dellorto) with open element air filters.

I own an STi and when I first started reading through this thread I was rolling my eyes. To be honest I'm impressed. Congrats for doing something different and it sounded MUCH better than I had expected. Now only if it had the power of a turbo boxer engine. :drunk:
