so about a month ago i thought my truck may need a starter only because 40% of the time it would not start on command. i would turn the key and it was like there wasnt a battery under the hood, i went to a shop with a new starter and was going to get them to swap it out, the tech tightened down the wing nut on my terminals and said to see if it changed anything before we swaped it out and that not be it.. so it worked for about a week and my friend and i put in my amp and subs, later that night at a party the truck doesnt start. next morning i went and got new terminals and finally for once everything worked. then today i was borrowing my uncles truck and i got back to pick mine up (mind you this is about a month or two after the party incident) and my truck doesnt start. do you guys have any ideas

i would triple check that ALL connections on the starter, batt, and grounds are tight and clean.

and also check the small signal wire to the starter, they tend to get brittle over the years and break @ the plug.

id also pull out your starter and have it bench tested.

do you have lights when this happens?

mine has also been doing something similar..but I can hear the fuel pump and the relay click..I have replaced the starter, bought a new key and tested the clutch switch, replaced starter relay..last thing i can think of is the ignition switch..sometimes i have to jump the leads on the starter to start it

i messed with the starter relay as well, worked once then not again. gary (truckaction) told me how to do this.

buy a ford starter relay (about $12) i bought a battery cable roughly 24", one end with battery terminal and one with eyelit. another cable roughly 48" long with eyelits on both ends. and a roll of 10 ga. wire, along with a spade end (the one on my starter was broken).

anyways you install the ford relay on the front fender welll area. run the one battery cable to the left side of the relay. run the other longer cable from the same terminal down to the starter. take the factory trigger wire and disconnect it from the starter. pull the wire up to the ford relay and cut it. install an eyelit on the end coming from the wire harness. hook it to the little post on the relay (left one, i believe labeled S). then using the other side of the trigger wire (the end that was cut that has the stock plug for the starter) install an eyelit and hook to the second small post, and run it down to the starter and hook it up( mine was messed up so i used some new 10ga. wire and ran it to the starter). its hard to explain but only takes like 30min. and around $40 to do. it permanantely fixes the problem though.

here a pic of mine so you kinda see what i mean. the black wire on the little post is the factory wire i cut, and the green is the wire i made.

the trigger wire is the little wire by itself that hook to the starter.
