I have had my 85 long bed pickup since 1990, I like it. Now the Cali smog patrol is breathing down my neck. It is all stock with a new head and good compression. It is tuned with OEM parts and I think the TPS is adjusted right. The only thing I have not replaced is the catalytic converter. It failed smog twice, is there any reason I cannot get this right or is it good money after bad. I am ready to drive in to Longo Toyota and have them do a diagnostic, any thoughts?
Thanks, I have settled down a bit after reading the relevant 22RE threads. My first test failed on Idle HC, the test came in at 154 PPM and the max was 150, so I went home and adjusted the Throttle Position Sensor, I think correctly, when I went back for a tailpipe retest the tech was showing an even higher HC, maybe 1000.
How to Pass Smog A lot of good info here. Sounds like you need a cat....or your truck is idling rough (missing)?
Thanks, I am studying the Smog thread. You get paranoid thinking the bludg wants to force you into one of those slinky import sedans. No it is running well and I saw improvement after adjusting TPS. Right now I think I will go ahead and get the new catalytic converter and put on a new Denso O2 sensor. Then do whatever I can glean from the Thread. After that if it still checks out weak I will drive 100 miles with red line in tank to big Toyota dealership and see if their hot tech guy can find anything on diagnostics before testing for smog.
