    Hey All!

I'm taking the advice and guidance of ShoNuff and dillinja666 and doing a distributor swap with an electronic igintion.
    Link: ( http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?p=85135#post85135 )

Now from a previous purchase for my 1976 Truck, I may already have what I need for the distributor swap. Please look at the attached pictures and help me identify what exactly I have, because I'm not sure. I don't want to rip stuff apart just to learn, "Oh you didn't need to do that. It was the right piece all along..."

Anyway, the first set of pictures comes from an 18rc engine. This has an electric ignitor in it already. But what about the second set of pictures?

What is this? This distributor came off of a 20R engine. But what is the green plug? What does that hook into? I brought the whole distributor to the local parts store, and the clerks weren't sure if it was an electronic system or points.

So what it is? Can I use this? Or do I have to swap out the ignitor from the 8rc distributor and then place it into the 20r distributor?

Thanks to all. I really am very new to all this, and I appreciate all the help!

edit: thats the pickup for the ignitor. there is a long wire with a plug coming off the ignitor that will connect to there.

this is the ignitor you need, the wire coming off to the right of the pic, you will need to cut that green connector off yours and use but connectors to connect the 2 wires in your distributor to the 2 wires coming off the ignitor there.

the connector for that long wire is a green circle connector, yours is a square one but it should still work.

    dillinja666 ---

    Thank you!
    :clapping:

    I'm gonna do that:

I'll cut off the rectangular, green piece.
    Strip the wires.
Attach those circular-end pieces onto the exposed wires.
    Crimp the ends.

    Finally:

Attach the red wire to the postive post on the coil.
Attach the white wire to the negative coil post.

    Start truck ( I hope! )

    Is this correct?

What about the wires already on the coil?
Do I remove those from the coil posts? Or leave those wires on?
    And what about the balast?
    Still keep existing wiring?

    Thank you again!
    You've made my month!

you need to power the red wire on the green plug thats on the left of the pic. not the farthest left, the next one. make it a power wire thats on when you crank, and running, but off when key off or else you wont be able to turn off your truck. leave the wires going from the ballest to the coil, those are definitly needed and are already in the right spot. after power is aplied to the ballast unit it should crank over and start.

you did not take advice and guidance...

you never searched, or you would of found http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=389&highlight=points

sell the petronix kit from the 18r-c, absolutely useless to you. unless the petronix kit will work in your OEM dizzy.

and also like i said you need a SET from a 1978+ 20r or 22r powered pickup, RV, celica, or corona. the coil/pickup posted is a later style one, and I've had bad luck using them with older dizzy's. plus you will have the factory plugs so you wont need to cut wires.

it is also REALLY easy to repin a toyota plug, just peel back the weather seal, use a safety pin to pop the lock and pull the wire out.

    your homework:

    read my thread i posted.

find a wiring diagram for both your truck and the donor rig you find. study them to understand what to do with the wires.

search this site, and google for "20r electronic ignition swap" and other similar phrases.

im kinda getting worried. you should not be attempting wiring if you dont fully understand what each wire does. your either gonna electrocute yourself, start a fire, or just ruin stuff. unfortunately i dont have the time to walk you through this, so you need to do research.

never fully believe anything on the net, im on my 4th beer already, the F up is just waiting to happen.

    ShoNuff --

    You are correct.
I am new to all of this.
    I am tryiong to learn.

Thank you for posting the link to the needed referenced posting.
I did try and find it.
I'm still learning how to use the site.
    My searches didn't find it.
    Again, thanks for the link.

I will read the posting a few times.
All the advice here has been helpful.
I don't want to make any mistakes.
That's why I ask what seems to be redundant questions.

Thank you for the patience and advice!

dont mean to be a d!ck but sometimes tough love is the best.

these trucks have the SAME motor and tranny's as the models listed above. so any and all forums out there that feature these cars have the info your after.

try poking around at these for more points-to-electronic info

    www.classic-celica.com
    www.1stgencelica.com
    www.pirate4x4.com

    some searching tips:

instead of searching for "20r points to electronic ignition swap" just search for "points"

the more you can narrow down your search and limit search terms the better info you get.

also go buy a hanes manual for your truck, or search ebay and find a toyota factory repair manual and possibly the wiring supplement.

or if your really cheap (like me) you can go to autozoneDOTcom and sign up to see their online haynes manuals, whole complete manuals for most toyota's from 78-95ish and a lot of other cars.
