So I have had a 78 for about five years. I had a 92 before that. Ive been doing the weber thing a few years. The bonus is its simple, and I run a 20R head on an early 22R block for high compression with stock type parts. The intakes of the 22 and 20 are different both in bolt pattern and physical port shape/location. But what I have never tried to figure is, how far off are they?

My idea would be to take my existing 20/22 combo and swap an EFI intake on and match the cam with an EFI type. I thought about using the early era (85 or so) harness and computer because theyre simple but use a late type intake for the better flow. I have a giant throttle body from a chevy truck I did work on, and the other stuff is all junkyardable. Anyways, non of that is the hard part. The hard part is that there isnt a way to put an EFI intake onto a 20R head. My thought is to cut the first few inches off the 20R from the head and the last few of the 22R EFI intake and then weld them together. Doesnt have to be pretty since it would be ported anyways. I have welded aluminum before with my buddies mig. Cast might be a bit tougher but I read somewhere that if you use oven cleaner then actually heat it in a garage oven you can get the metals pores pretty clean to weld on. Has anybody ever seen something like this done or have any technical insight? Thanks guys.

And I'm not sure if this would be something I do in my 78 or another project. But I would like to finally brainstorm it around someplace other than my stoned noggin

nothing wrong with brainstorming. It did lead to some very nice custom 20r efi setups over the years.

you could always machine a 1/2" thick adapter plate to smooth out the transition from the intake to the head.

An adapter is another option. Wasn't sure if they were close enough for that to work. I think I'll have to get a 20 and 22 intake gasket and overlay them together at the parts store.

I've seen people make adapters to put 20r side-draft cannon intakes on 22r heads, so I figure it's gotta line up pretty close.

There's also a third option. Get higher compression pistons, find a 22re head and intake for the 82-84 celica with the 20-bolt intake instead of the 15 bolt (make sure it's still round exhaust port, not pear), and then you're basically right at the same spot or better. it's possible you might dip just a handful of HP if you don't get higher compression pistons, but you'll have the efi to tune it back up. I believe the 82/83 celicas had the easy-as-heck-to-tune analog systems, but those may be even rarer than the head to find.

Oh, and a fourth option: skip the efi and go with a single side draft weber intake

    Last thing. 20r efi porn
