My trans is slipping like crazy so I got a replacement off craigslist and figured Id swap it in a day..

I found some pictures and references but never found a d.i.y....

and now that I have the truck up and I have the transmission disconnected just floating under the car. Im stuck trying to drop it out.... theres a bar going across the frame where the torsions bolts are and it's making it very difficulult to get this thing out....

So i'm starting to think this is one of those trucks that you pull the engine and trans out together.... like you cant just drop the transmission from the bottom...

Im afraid i might damage the cab or transmission...if i just let gravity do it's work and try to let the front drop while the tail lays on the beam....

you need to take all the bolts off and then pull and rotate. you need to rotate the trans so it will clear the torsion bolts. I would strongly suggest another person to help, unless you're the hulk. That thing is heavy.

also, it might be stuck to the engine block, so a prybar or big ass flat head between the two can help.

i got it out but mannnn that **** was tight!!
I had it angled with the tail as far back as it can and the front top just barely scraped the flywheel while dropping out.
I'm doing this whole thing by myself and i feel like the REAL bitch is gonna be putting it back in at an angle......i have this tranny jack but it does me no good that i have to man handle the **** outta this thing...

I know your pain I had to man-handle a 4spd into a c10 by myself, at least I had plenty of room. The floor around the shifter unbolted in a large enough piece to stand through the floor and straddle the trans while lifting.

hey i swapped this auto transmission out and it will not shift out of first.... i dont know why... I almost have too much fluid in it trying to see if that was the problem but it wasnt...

Im really freaking out because I bought this tranny used and went through all this trouble to swap it in and Im short on time and now it's not working...

It jumps into reverse immediately and goes into first immediately but the freaking thing will not shift...

i already had an automatic trans. It was slipping. I'm about to drive 2500 miles to the west side of the United States i needed to make sure everything was solid.

I got another used automatic trans from an 86 RV home toyota and now that i have it in.... its giving me problems...

im trying to diagnose why its not shifting out of 1st gear...

Is the transmission electronicly controlled? I know the supras and cressidas of the same year as your truck are.
Can you manually shift to higher gears?

If the trans has electronic shift solenoids it could be as simple as a stuck/bad solenoid. Drop the trans oil pan and apply 12 volts across each solenoid. You should here a click. If no click, solenoid is bad. You could perform the same test without dropping the pan by applying the 12 volts to the appropiate wires in the harness. The clicks can be heard through the cab if the background noise is low.
The final thing to consider is if your old trans was still shifting (even with slip), you could swap the solenoids or entire valve body assembly from the old trans to the new. Make sure you clean any metal particles from the parts.

i figured it out. It was the cable line that connects to the throttle...

The tranny I got was "technically" the same tranny by model number.. but since it was for a floor shifted automatic instead of column some things were different...

one being that the cable line was shorter than my old one by like an inch... so it was pulled tight the whole time telling my tranny to downshift...

soooo glad Im finally done with the swap and my truck is back on the road!!
