Does anyone know of a suspension LIFT kit for a 77? I'm about 2 1/2 miles and almost 2000' elevation gain up a fairly rough road from the nearest town. While I have a 4x4 for the really rough times of the year, I'd like the extra ground clearance on my 2wd for the other 8 months. She'll make it up the road now as it is, but if I ever have to haul a load (read, compress the suspension) I'd be afraid of banging something underneath on a rock. I already have drop shackles on the rear that allow me to run 31/10.50/15's, but they won't fit on the front (and still be drivable). I'll do a body lift if I have to, but I'd much rather go for the suspension lift if it's available.
ive seen 2wd lift kits for the 79-83 models. never the earlier ones. doesn't that year truck have coil springs in front? you could try to find some universal fit coils that are longer than the stock ones for a bit of lift. to me body lifts look too tacky and are unsafe. any 4x4 shop could fab ub some new control arms to lift the front as well.
I was just doing a bunch of junkyard researching yesterday for Curtisz since he is considering lifting his hilux. Saab 900 rear springs have a slightly higher spring rate (based on GVWR: rear) and seem to be physically a little beefier. They also measure out 2" longer. Thats no uninstalled and on the ground, but at droop on both vehicles. A hilux front spring is about 4.5" in diameter. So that should get about 2" of lift up front. The next option that is popular with IFS lift guys is a balljoint spacer. It leaves the balljoints bolted under the arms, but spaces them away about 1-1.5" Its like a lift spindle. Do both of those, and the 31s should fit just fine. Get a low backspace that will allow you to turn fully. I would also suggest to take a fullsize truck/van leaf pack apart, and use a few of the middle ones into your pack to add weight capacity and arch the springs. You may or may not need that lift shackle anymore depending how much you add. Post some pictures
