im in the process of getting rid of my early 22r pop up motor, but its pretty hard here to find one of these!
its a single chain that came off a celica... my question is, before i get rid of it.... can i use a 20r head with this and still retain the single chain and have it running good??
if not then im prolly going to sell it to fund my supra project!
    thanks for any input!!!

    What year is the engine?
For early blocks (made before aug. of 84) the 20r should be direct bolt on. Should work with either the early single row or double row timing chain if you want to put one one (dual row is the way to go).

Depending on the 20r head you may need to get an electric fuel pump as well.

you want to check your engine
this picture is an example of a NON compatible, you would have to do a lot of milling...

it shows the rear of the engine to the right side of the screen so the right side of the engine is facing the camera, thus if you have that "laser block" logo, it's gonna take a lot of milling if you want a hyrbid
on the other hand if you don't find it, you can go ahead and get you a dual chain set and slide it on with no problems...

and here is what the pistons of the compatible engine looks like, "domed" style

so as long as you don't see the laser block id but you do have the domed pistons, go ahead and build your hybrid!
