I know the center console and TV housing is custom fiberglass stuff... I'm guessing the factory stuff your talking about was sanded smooth and maybe glazing putty to finish???
The guys on s-10 forums do this alot. Short answer.... It involves ALOT of wet sanding and time. You have to get it all smoothed out by wet sanding off the texture. And they use a plastic filler to fill gaps. Only way to do it, is out of the truck. And you have to use a primer that will bond to plastic and not react with the paint. Disclaimer..... The guys at s-10 forums are pricks.....post questions at your own risk.
can't you do the same way as they do fiberglass boxes...? Like for example put that cloth that they put over the box and then bondo then sand and then paint... would that working in the dash..? unno but if it does, or its a good way to try
Easiest way is to sand it mostly off with like 180, then prime it with slick sand or s2k high build primer. Then block that with 300 then seal it and color it
CajunTaco knows whats up, do exactly what he said. Fiberglass does not bond directly to plastic. most "fiberglass dashes" have very little or sometimes even no fiberglass in them at all.
If your gonna fiberglass it, put tape or foil or something on the dash first so the fiberglass doesnt stick to the dash, then fiberglass from there. Essentially you are using the dash as a molding. Since theres the tape/foil it should pop right off. Just gotta figure out how to bolt it back up. Whichever way you choose going be choke sanding though, good luck.
ya ill prob do what cajun said ive seen how to do the mold, but sandin an primer sounds cheaper an if it dont work out then ill do the mold, thanks 4 the help evryone
should be just fine sanding out the texture, priming it and then sanding it again. trying to sand all the texture out is almost as bad as just trying to fiberglass it. and theyre right, fiberglass doesnt stick to hard plastics very well. ive modded consoles and dash before. its a bitch.
that bodystyle, its actually not very hard at all. i think all you need is a 10mm and a 12mm socket, and a screw driver. start at the kick panels, take those off. then remove the columb cover, and the lower 3 sections of the dash. and take out the cluster section and the little parts to it. next take out the cluster itself. disconnect the heater controls from the main dash body, and that should provide access to all the main structure bolts/screws. i did one at a junkyard in about 15-20 minutes. which was the first time taking all of it out, but i had taken all the other stuff to the cluster many times. its not bad really. i have a spare upper/main section if you want it. i was shaving that pocket/dip from it.
Good info thanks Hey guys! I have a 1993 S-10 and I am looking to swap in a Toyota engine........LOL Just kidding. They probably are di**s, but I would beak them too if they signed in here and started asking questions.
