so im currently building a mild prerunner and long story short i need to use my stock axle until this summer when i go 4link and an axle upgrade and need to determine how to gear it properly. its a 94' 2wd extra cab with a 22re and im pretty sure has the 7.5 3rd? any one help me out? im looking to run 33" tires. i know most of you go down instead of up over here but 4x4 guys don't seem to have the 2wd knowledge you guys have.

    thanks

Well I am working on an '88 4wd pickup and I found out that I would need 4.88 gears to run 33s. And any bigger than that probably 5.29s. It's nice that you only have to change one set of gears seeing as it is a 2wd.
I have a Detroit Tru-Trac meant for the front of a 4x4 to use in my 2wd rearend. But the 7.5 front 4x4 gears will not work in your 2wd rearend. I believe they work in reverse.

You have the 7.5 rear UNLESS the truck you have came with a 4 speed manual trans then it will have the 8" rear. You have a couple of different options. You can find a 2wd 8" rear, then you can use the 4WD 3rd members which are a bolt in and you can use the factory 4.88 gears that they put in some trucks and 4Runners or you can regear you 7.5. I had a prerunner with 31" tires and 4.56 gears. It was a perfect setup but since you want to run 33" tires, I would go with a minimum of 4.88 gears but HIGHLY recommend 5.29's. Many 4wd guys run the 5.29 gears with 33" tires with the 22RE. They make a 5.29 gear set for the 7.5" diff. Also run a Detroit locker. Perfect for street and the dunes or a decent limited slip. Do not waste your money on a Lockright, they will suck for your application. For the 4wd they work great.

where or who makes a 5.29 gear set for my 7.5 diff? and i know this is not ideal... but i think i might just weld my diff. only because later this summer when i get some more cash im going to build a four link with a larger rear axle that can take the abuse. then i will install a locker. its just hard to justify buying one for my stock axle when its going out the window in 3 months. anyone have any input?
