Well guys, like I said in my introduction post, this truck is mainly going to be my commuter. I need the best mileage possible out of it, but I was also thinking of extending the range. Now before I begin, this might be a completely hypothetical question, as I haven't even run a full tank through the truck. My experience though, is that most 2wd trucks came equipped with a 14~ gallon tank. Before I scrapped it out and sectioned the frame for a trailer, I pulled the 17~ gallon tank from my '90 4x4. My question is, has anyone on here attempted to put the larger tank from my 4x4 into a 2wd?

I know I'm going to have to swap the pumps with mine being a 22re and the old truck being a 3vz, but are there any other issues? I'm going to be swapping the bed anyway, with the rust issues the current one has, so I plan on swapping the tank at the same time.

I thought the same thing and was told it wouldn't fit, but never found out why. My guess would be height clearance, which may be solved by a 1 to 2 inch body lift. However, I have to say that for three extra gallons, it my not be worth the expense and effort. What about adding a second tank between the frame rails in the back? You could use a fuel cell, which are relatively inexpensive. The idea I'm kicking around for my truck is to add a fuel cell which will be plumbed to an external fuel pump and routed into the stock tank. It will be run by a switch on the dash. When the stock tank runs low, you just hit the switch and the AUX tank fills the stock tank. When the gauge hits full, you shut off the pump and your good. Another plus would be that the tank could be left empty for regular commuting and a plastic fuel cell and pump will add minimal weight to the vehicle. When you need the extra fuel, you just fill the tank up and double your range.

The only reason I was considering it was because the bed has to come off antyways. It's got some rust issues, and like the extra fuel tank, I also have the bed off my old truck.

My 1988 long bed 2WD has a 17 gallon tank. Maybe a 17 gallon tank is too long for a short bed?

4X4 tanks are significantly deeper then the 2x tanks. I doubt you could get one in there without it hanging several inches below the frame. FYI- 22RE and 3VZE use the same fuel pump.

Twin, from what I've learned, the 22re and the 3vz had different pumps. The 3vz and 22ret used a slightly higher volume pump. But thanks for the answers guys. I don't know how long it's gonna be until I do the bed swap, but I figure it wouldn't be too hard to test fit the tank once I get it off. I just thought i might see if anyone has tried or not.

    91-95 Pickups and 4Runners 22RE or 3VZE use pump # 23221-46010

Perhaps in the older style (90 and older) pumps the 22RE had a weaker pump, but the switch to the new pump design in 1991 had them all using the same pump.

Stock tank on my 88 Extra Cab was 12.5 gal. which is the size of my stainless fuel cell== 225 mile range!
I think that is more than enough between stations!!

My LONGBED has a 16 gallon. Most it ever took was 14.2 from dead empty to full. That's probably the dents all over lol. I could go almost 300 miles between tanks on a road trip.
