its an automatic 22r and when i change gears it kicks in hard and it also doesn't seem to switch gear at the right time, i have to let down the gas then press again to change gear, and when it takes of it like skips, weak, then goes... but why doesn't it pick up quick like my 22re???

Just got the truck.. sorry for all the questions:confused:

Also will a 22re fuel inject fit good on my 85 toyota pickup extra cab, and still be smog legal??

there's the problem right there.......... easy way to solve problem, dump the tranny out and swap in a 5 speed manual. :waytogo:

j/k....... just sounds like the tranny is on its way out........ i would definitely swap it out for a 5 speed tho and just call it quits. :waytogo:

should be fine so long as you get it from an 85 or newer truck equipped with the 22re. best bet, get a donor truck so you can swap everything over. :waytogo:

if you dont switch to 5 speed, and plan on keeping it automatic, you should get a rebuilt transmission with brand new torque converter, that should solve your problem......

haha, ya 5 speed is better but i think i might keep that automatic, easy to hit switches while cruising, but does 22r top at 80 mph? and why does my truck accelerates slow... compare the 22re?? could it be a air leak?

yea umm.......... mine will do well over that....... like somewhere around the 120+ mark.

but yea, shouldn't top out at 80.... these things dont have governors like new cars so it should tap out till engine tachs out or load wall..... you got something up in the trans..... if you dont have an idea of how to work on these its best to send it out to a trans shop if you wanna fix it and keep it.

Check the level of your tranny fluid.

    Should have kept... '88 4x4 22RE
My back up car, a 1995 Rodeo had a similar problem, this cured it, as well as a new tranny cooler line. Now it just leaks.

when i first got my truck it could barely get pass 65mph
i changed my stock carb to a 32/36 and it helped alot
i also advanced my timing just a little bit and 110mph aint a problem to reach

but now i got a set of 40mm webers dcoe

you should try to overhaul the stock carb but best bet is to get a 32/36

how much did ur 32/36 cost you?

dang, if your trucks go over 80 no problem, mine must have a problem because like at 70 it feels like the engine is top out...

how much does it cost to get a tranny rebuilt? most likely will need one, and does that tranny will work with a 22re motor???

just change the fluid drain it all out and put new fluid toyota spec type fluid (i forget which one) but maybe put some lucas hard shift treatment and when u check trans fluid it should be checked with the engine running and IN GEAR (reverse or Drive). and then checked while its at warm operating temp.

even bone stock with pea-shooter exhaust and a 4 speed my truck would do 80 no sweat......... with a few goodies here and there...... it does substantially more

the biggest hurdle is that auto trans...... its gonna suck all the squirrel furry power out of that motor..... 5 speed will make up the loss in power. next issue is the carb since its secondaries operate on vaccume..... the weber will cure that issue with mechanical secondary that will open when you want it to......... not when the vacuum dictates :waytogo:

of course your going to get a rebuilt trans for your specified truck, it should work with no problem, to save you the time and to get your moneys worth you should swap to five speed garentee a big change in power like what SD said

    about the 32/36
i got mines at a junk yard for about 40 bucks
    i over hauled it
and played around with the jettings

I wonder if my truck had a 5spd, will it fly?

you may need stuff for the clutch, such as clutch slaves and all

yeah, youre gonna need the master and slave cylinders along with the pedal and everything for it under the dash. you can make the lines for the fluid pretty easily or just pick them up at a junkyard. also need the manual tranny flywheel

    Dont forget the pedals.

Not sure on the toyota auto but there may be a vacuum line going to the modulator on the trans. Check to see if tranny fluid comes out when you remove the line from the modulator. If it does, than its no good .
