Doing a carb to EFI swap on my 89 pickup. Turns over, no start. I can pour a little gas into the intake, it fires right up, idles smooth, then of course when the fumes are spent, it dies. I am getting 12v to the injectors, the ECM is pulsing ground to the injectors. I can feel the circuit open relay click when I try to start engine. I am getting good fuel pressure to the cold start injector. Any thoughts? Also, what does this terminal go to? It is not a ground - it is a B+ terminal. I have no idea what it would go to. All the EFI stuff (ECM, body and engine harness, fuse block, etc) is from a 94 pickup. I have a 94 FSM and I still am lost as to what this terminal goes to.
looks like a ground point. make sure all ground points/junction have good contact and are secure. so with adding fuel manually - it starts... runs a little... then dies. it may be a fuel delivery issue. bad pump? clogged lines? ---one way to check is crack the fuel line open and crank -BE VARY CAREFUL AS FUEL WILL SPRAY OUT. try to cover with something. ur just looking to see if the pump pushes fuel to the rail. on a side note -ive had this similar issue. sprayed fuel manually, would run for a little then die. thought it was a fuel pump. spent $500 later (255WB fuel pump, regulator, lines fittings, ect) still didnt work. after some further diag time, found out it was a blown injector transistor inside the ECU. scored a new ecu - plugged it in. fired right up. $0.02 good luck
Thanks for the quick reply. It's not a ground point. I thought it was. When I hooked up battery terminals they started getting hot. It's a B+ point. I traced it back to the fuse block. It's a big white power wire. I'm getting fuel pressure. I cracked open the banjo bolt at the cold start injector and fuel squirts on crank up. The injectors are getting B+ and the ECM is pulsing ground to the injectors. And yes, when I manully put gas in, it idles like a champ.
You have the hose from the intake to afm on with no leaks right? If there is a vacuum leak between them there won't be enough vacuum to open the door in the afm to trigger the fuel pump.
No vacuum leaks. If the intake tube isn't attached or has a leak, the engine will start but stalls right away. Mine will crank, but no start. I'm getting fuel pressure when I crank it.
no vacuum leaks + fuel pressure + good power + ... i would say check the ECU. open it up (BE VERY CAREFUL) and check for any blown components -i.e. capacitors, transistors, etc. ... its what i found when i had the same problem. the truck actually shut down on me while i was driving. worth a shot.
I will have to check the ECM. So even if the ECM is sending the ground signal to the injectors, it could still be bad? Too bad I'm not able to swap the ECM from my 4Runner. I appreciate the help. I want to get the 2WD truck back on the road - the gas mileage is SO much better than the Runner.
