early 22r an laser block identification

    is there a way to tell the 2 apart? previous owner states that the 22r in mine isnt the original one. kinda hoping i can identify it as an early 22r so i can start sourcing items to run a 20r head haha.

    you can also tell if its an early block if the timming chain is a link longer and the timming cover is also taller then the later blocks. also the domed pistons

    The non laser block has a slightly shorter deck height and a taller head. I believe that was '81-'83/4 ish?

    going from this pic, i have a laser block according to locating that "boss/flange" under the exhaust header. oh well lol. ill just have to go look for a block some time then. gives me an excuse to build one since itll already be out of the truck.

    To run the 20 head on the laser block there is some machine work due to PTV clearence if I read the how to correctly. and at this point I wouldn't want to do that until I decide to rebuild the short block. I actually would like to do as much of the work in my garage as possible as well.
