So I just finished a major repair on my 22R, which included removing the distributor. Now that it's back in, I've got it running, but there's an issue with it. When I went to set the timing I found that I need to turn the distributor all the way back just to keep the engine running at all. I think if I could turn it past the point where the bolt normally stops it, it would run better. Does that mean it's rotated out of place since I removed it? I made marks to line everything up when it came back in and the engine didn't rotate without it...
Use a timing light to check to see where you are now, and if you can not move the dis. where it needs to go to adjust the timing you will have to remove it and reinstall it until you can. It is a good idea to center it that way you will have the maximun capabilities of advancing and retarding the timing.
You should always mark a distributor before removal one mark when its in where rotor is at and another where rotor turns rite as its removed point to 2nd mark for reistall and should line up with first mark
