not having taken a 22re apart myself I can't be sure, but the toyota engines I've experienced so far were all regular right hand thread.

more or less in order of time/effort involved:
-pull the radiator and use an impact gun.
-wrap nylon webbing around the pulley, tie off to a pipe braced against the frame. wrap it so it's self tightening and use a beefy pipe.
-fill cyl 1 with rope (nylon 12 strand braided 3/8" dia you'll need at least 10 feet.) make sure you're on the compression stroke when you do it. basically, move the cylinder down, fill with rope, move the cylinder up, then back down and shove more in till you cant get any more in then loosen the pulley. takes a little brain work to make sure you're going the right direction but it's not hard.
-hit ratchet or breaker bar with a big hammer.

The crank bolt is standard RH thread, easiest way to break it loose is,,, 1/2" breaker bar, 19mm 6 point socket, put the socket on the bolt and turn the engine until the breaker bar is snug against the frame rail, bottom side of the frame if on the passenger side, top side if on the drivers side frame rail, dissable the ignition so it won't start, either pull the coil wire or unplug the distributor connector, hold the bar so it won't fall out but keeping out of the way, and have a friend tap the key like trying to start the engine, bang, it pops loose easily that way.

my second day ever using any forum....I did that years ago once on a different car and it worked great. My concern here was the timing chain doing further damage as the head is off. I know you have lots of knowledge and experience,I was curious what you thought about adding kerosene to the crankcase to flush out the remaining foam prior to pulling timing cover? I know how hard it was to clean off the valve cover and head. I really value your advice. many thanks!

Adding the kerosene to the crankcase won't hurt anything, but I really can't see it doing a lot other than helping rid the residual in the pan, if the engine were running, draining the oil, adding a new filter, new oil, let it run until up to temp, then adding a bit of kerosene would help to clean the insides up, the heat and splashing action of the oil inside while running is gonna do the most to flush out oil passages, pump, internals, ect. and the heat will help evaporate it away. It'll take a few changes but it'll go away quickly.

I gots no truck, for now
doesnt matter if the head is off, just make sure the chain doesnt get mashed into the bottom of the pan or anything werid like that. you are going to have to set the motor back to TDC after you break the bolt loose but you already know that if you got the head off.

yeh,I held it with a strap and the wrench and was able to crack it loose. I'm learning... my next question: my printout says I need to remove oil pan to replace chain cover assembly. For a 4wd it says I need to remove front differential. Is diff removal for real????

The oil pan can remain on during a timing chain cover replacement. I completed it without removal.
