    Hey everyone,

I have a 92 Toyota pickup base model. It has 300k on it, not sure if the motor was ever rebuilt or swapped out but that's what my odometer says. Anyway, I have an oil leak but can't determine the source of it and wanted to know what are the prime suspects or common areas that the 22RE is known to leak from. I figure if I can just replace all the known areas I'll save time later down the road.

    Thanks in advance

oil pump/front crank seal is a common leak other than valve cover and oil pan. There is a tsb on the front crank seal where you gotta use a thinner seal to compensate for worn in grooves from the original front crank seal. All the toyota dealers know about it and once you mention oil pump re seal they will already know what you need. But with that many miles i would use some oil dye and a uv light and try and track down where its coming from because the 22re will eventually leak from everywhere..mainly the front crank seal/oil pump, oil pan, valve cover, timing cover, distributor o-ring, rear main seal.

That's some great info. I'll start doing my homework on how to replace those areas mentioned. Hopefully it's as easy as some of the other things I've worked on before.

I've heard about UV dye but never looked into it very much. I might go that route after I change out the above mentioned items since I'm sure my engine would benefit from the refresh.

The front crank seal is the same as being “almost pregnant “.When they go, you’ll be dumping almost a quart of oil every 10 minutes. Most common leak is the oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket. If you see a lot of oil behind the crank pulley then the seal is bad. They’re not expensive to replace. With 300K, you know Toyota has a “kick ass” engine.

Agreed. 300k is legit especially considering the routine beatings this thing has taken in it's life and I'm sure the maintenance records on this thing is probably less then stellar from what I've discovered so far. I'll def start with the oil pan and valve cover. Really wish I didn't just change the oil like last week before I noticed the leak.

Check your oil filter for tightness.
