Mine is on its way out. I am fine in 1st and 2nd, 3rd slips if you get on it pretty hard, 4th and 5th are worthless if you intend to speed up or slow down. Any suggestions on doing this? Where to buy, what all should I replace while I'm in there? The throw out bearing doesn't seem to make noise and there isn't any chatter. Thanks.
Most any clutch kit from the auto parts store will work fine for a daily driver, prices will vary, but 125.00 is in the ballpark for the kit. If your wanting a more performance oriented setup those are available too, such as centerforce, they just have a bit more clamping force via weights that work by centrifical force, some pressure plates have heavier spring pressure for the same thing but can be hard on the hydraulics causing leaks from requireing more pressure to push them in. If your gonna go to the trouble to do the clutch you might as well do it all, the kit comes with clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. Personally I would also have the flywheel resurfaced while its apart. especially since its been slipping and subjected to the heat.
If you look in the fine print at most parts stores, their warranty says you need a new flywheel or resurface the existing one for it to be honored. other than that it's just silly to spend $100-200 on something and how many hours putting it in to not do it right and have to do it again. Please do the throwout and pilot bearings because murphey's law means they'll start squeaking, chirping, or lock up the week after you put the clutch in. They will be included in any clutch kit worth getting so why wouldn't you? what to replace: *clutch KIT (clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing) *flywheel (resurface or replace. they're cheap enough for OE ones. rockauto has them for 50, most parts stores will have them for $75-100) *all the bolts are *supposed* to be replaced but many people reuse them. DD sure, any sort of hard use I'd get new ones. ARP flywheel and pplate bolts are under $40 together. (driftmotion.com for 7M) *rear main while you're down there *front main on the trans while you're down there. Lots of people like the marlin crawler clutch kits. you can get exedy kits on ebay pretty cheap (friend of mine uses one on his turbo'd and megasquirted 86 cressida). As mentioned, for a DD most parts store clutch kits will work fine. I used one I found in my garage for a MKII celica that I got a few years ago with a flywheel used. slipped bad on the cressida but I found the flywheel was machined without the step, I already had the new FW for the truck and it was fine towing a 5k lb trailer.
Replaced the clutch in my 91 using all parts of clutch kit but I did not do the other items that kamesama mentioned. Within 4 months I was pulling tranny again to do the seals so yah I would definetly do everything at once if its gonna be apart. Saves time, energy, hassle, and money. Also you wouldnt have to worry about any of that stuff for a very very long time. However another note would be to also check your slave and master cylinders as well for leaks and low fluid levels. DONT FORGET TO BLEED IT
